Sookie & Bill

Sookie & Bill

Reading Harry Potter was not my sole project of the long holiday weekend; I also watched True Blood Season 1 on DVD.  Yeah, I probably will be blind in a year or two with all the work I put on my eyes, but in the meantime, you gotta do what you gotta do.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked most of the casting and the show in general.  I was irritated by a few of the extra plot twists, but for the most part I found it a good watch.  Clearly, as I zoomed through all the episodes rather quickly.

SookieOf course, the only way you’re going to like the books or the show is if you’re alright with Sookie.  She is far from my favorite character but she doesn’t bother me either.  Initial clips I’d seen made me think I was going to hate the actress playing her but I thought Anna Paquin did an alright job.  She’s not the bombshell I pictured in my mind but she’s alright and I got past the southern accent after while.

BillBill was also in the alright category.  I loathe Bill in the books but this guy was pretty likeable and somewhat mysterious I thought.  I’m interested to see how they play him in season 3/4 when we get more information on the characters true motivations.

EricThere was so not enough of Eric but I enjoyed what I did see.  He had that sexy menacing thing going on, although I wasn’t too much of a fan of the hair.  The actor in real life is actually much hotter, but what can you do?  I thought they foreshadowed his interest in Sookie rather well when he was watching her kiss Bill goodbye and I am looking forward to much more time with the character.  Here’s hoping they expand his role even beyond the books, right?

littleJasonJason…I definitely liked the actor playing him and he was just that right kind of redneck hot guy with little regard for anybody else.  The issue I had with Jason was the stuff they added for him.  Making him the number one murder suspect was great, he is in the book, but making him addicted to V and then throwing him in with the Fellowship of the Sun?  I didn’t care for that at all.  Jason doesn’t hate vampires…while he was a little leery of his sister dating one he wasn’t outwardly hostile and never seemed to care if a girl he was sleeping with had done a vamp before.  I didn’t care for this added element to the story.

SamSam was perfectly cast in my eyes as well.  Just the right amount of cute and overprotective.  I also didn’t like his more antivamp stance though, in the books he may have hated Eric and Bill but he wasn’t against vampire rights and such.  He’s a shapeshifter for crying out loud, it doesn’t make sense for him to be against the rights of a different race.

TaraAnd then we have Tara…initially I loved her.  I thought she was hilariously outspoken and a lot of fun, but then she started freaking out every single minute about something stupid.  I was okay with the Sam/Tara romance that doesn’t remotely exist in the books, but they took her way too OTT for my taste.  I guess it’s to set up the MaryAnn storyline, whatever that might be, but I really stopped liking her.  And I was annoyed that they didn’t stick to the true Tara from the books either, the one who was out doing vamps long before Sookie met Bill.  I think she needs a friend who will encourage her and that deviation bothered me.  I did like her friendship with Sookie, it was just really changed from the books.

LafayetteMy favorite character was probably Lafayette.  He was awesome, a gossip, totally gay and proud of it and just like I imagined him to be.  I’m quite sorry that they’ve likely killed him off already, as I assume the foot hanging out of Andy’s car at the end of the show was his.  Too bad, he rocked.

Those were the main characters I wanted to touch on.  The rest of the side characters were okay to me.  Pam was not “Alice in Wonderland” enough for my taste but that’s about it.  I thrilled to see Danko appear as the Magistrate guy ordering Bill to turn Jessica as his punishment for killing Chow.  None of that happened in the book but I found it an enjoyable turn.  Not that I like Jessica, she’s quite annoying and the fact that she got on Eric’s nerves and he gave her back to Bill worries me.  I hope she dies soon.

As to the story, well it was pretty faithful minus the extra stuff they added for Jason and the romantic twist for Sam/Tara.  I don’t mind the idea of Sam/Tara but clearly that’s not going ahead since she met Eggs but I don’t want Jason with the Fellowship at all.  They could have brought that in more with Arlene I thought.  Oh well.

Lots of sex, lots of blood, definitely more than you get in the books, particularly the sex.  But I guess if we get to experience all of Jason’s conquests we’ll be in for quite a show.  It’s fine as long as we get some naked Eric soon…it’s only fair.  All in all, not a bad show and I enjoyed seeing the characters brought to life.  For the most part I actually liked them and it makes the books a little better for me actually.  Hopefully I can find a way to watch season 2 as it happens, somewhere the internet will have it for me right???  I do have a thirst for more!

Fake Sylar burns, brought a flashback of my Elle. Sigh.

Fake Sylar burns, brought a flashback of my Elle. Sigh.

So, we had Heroes season finale.  Did it live up to the hype? It really depends upon how you look at it and where they take it from here.  I was left highly annoyed and unmoved and irritated.  It’s not like I can’t see the great story line potential we were left with, but nothing Heroes has done lately gives me faith that that’s what will happen.  There was so much I hated about An Invisible Thread episode, one thing I truly loved, and one thing that I could learn to love with reservations.  Let’s start with the bad:

Repulsive. Do not go there.

Repulsive. Do not go there.

Sylar/Claire

No, no, 1000 times no!  One of the good things about the Sylar situation that will be discussed in complete detail is that now Claire can’t get with him.  Kinda hard to when he’s encased in her birth father.  Or morphed into, however you want to say it.  Having to endure those scenes where Sylar was talking about how they could be meant to be together and pushing and pulling for a thousand years just sickened me.  I get his logic but I am not on bored.  Claire sucks, he rocks.  Elle was the perfect twisted woman for him and he killed her.  And if he could/would kill Claire, I would probably be okay with it.  But he can’t and thus, no.  Baby Noah better not come to be…I’ve worried about that since hearing his name and seeing Sylar caring for Mr. Muggles and now it feels like they really will go there some day.  Claire better change quite a bit if that’s ever to be tolerated.

Hiro got to be a hero again, insert rolling eyes here.

Hiro got to be a hero again, insert rolling eyes here.

Hiro

As usual, Hiro annoyed the crap out of me.  He was actually useful when he kept HRG from getting drugged by Danko, but I took issue with that as well.  HRG would not turn his back on or trust that guy, not after all he’s seen him do.  So he should never have been in that position.  Of course my main issue with Hiro was that he lived.  I had high hopes that the bleeding might result in his unexpected delightful death but no.  Sigh.

Surprise, Ali Larter is naked again.

Surprise, Ali Larter is naked again.

Tracy

I knew she was coming back but really?  We have to bring her back as a dripping wet naked assassin?  Does Ali Larter have a sex clause in her contract?  Why can we not get rid of this character/actress?  And now she’s killing people?  What?  Is she our big bad for next season, cause that will drive me away from the show.  She’s not qualified to stand in Sylar’s shadow, let alone become sort of evil genius.  I have thought of one potential use for her though, if she’s exacting revenge for her captivity, perhaps she’s going to come after Nathan.  She’ll try to kill him, they’ll figure out he’s unkillable and Sylar just may awaken inside.  And, to be honest, though I dislike her, she and Zachary Quinto could bring some major heat to the screen.  So I could deal, as long as it brings back real Sylar.

Matt makes Sylar think he's Nathan.

Matt makes Sylar think he's Nathan.

Angela/HRG/Matt

Oh you tricky, tricky people.  Can Matt’s mind mojo really be a permanent and forever thing?  Will doing what he did eat him up inside and turn him darker?  Will he relent and release my Sylar for me if I ask nicely?  I guess I don’t really understand why this move was necessary.  Now that Peter can morph, couldn’t they try to convince him to play Nathan when required?  I guess he’d probably refuse and he’d be too choked up over his brother’s death to agree to such a thing, so maybe it makes sense.  I just am not that happy about the situation.  I think it’ll be fun to watch Angela and HRG interact with “Nathan” and I did enjoy her face when he was fascinated by the clocks incorrect time at the end.  The little things will be beautiful to watch.

Another interesting thing is that when/if this comes out, they’re in deep shit with their loved ones.  How do you think Peter and Claire are going to react when they find out that they tricked Sylar into playing Nathan and lied to them for however many days, weeks, months it goes down?  I think it could go a long way toward bringing out my bitter future Peter, actually, which I am totally fine with.  I just think it’ll have a ripple effect on their lives in a way they’re not anticipating, which admittedly makes for good show.

It's scary when your puppet comes back to life, isn't it Danko?

It's scary when your puppet comes back to life, isn't it Danko?

Danko

At first I was quite put out that Sylar didn’t end him right after taking the knife out of his head.  How cool is that Sylar still has an “off switch” but he can move it around thanks to his morphing, by the way?  Anyway, I was pleased when Sylar shifted into Danko and killed some of his men and then shifted back into the agent to arrest him.  That’s probably an even worse punishment for a man like Danko anyway, to be branded a traitor and a killer.  Of course, HRG and he formed their momentary truce and last we saw Danko was drugged, so who knows what has become of him?  I’m glad that he’s still alive now because he has some interesting gray potential to explore, should they decided to.

And on to the good:

The moment of the night, equal power face to face, and such pretty faces they are.

The moment of the night, equal power face to face, and such pretty faces they are.

Peter

Pretty, powerful Peter is back!!!  Words cannot express my joy when Peter announced his plan to touch Sylar and get his powers so he’d be able to actually take him on, followed by the announcement that he’d done it.  I would like to express some irritation that the majority of the fight scene consisted of Claire standing outside a door with blue flashes illuminating her though.  What, the effects were too much?  I was a little pleased that Sylar was using Elle’s power, it felt like kind of a tribute to his missing woman, but why didn’t I get to see it?

Even better than Peter getting Sylar’s powers was what he did with them though.  Sylar killing the press secretary and waltzing happily into the limo and shaking hands with the president and having nothing happen?  Worlds of awesome.  Well something did happen, he morphed into Nathan and himself and various others but he didn’t turn into the president, then Prez morphs himself into Peter, face to face with Sylar and he jams him with the drug.  Beautiful.  Awesome.  We needed to have an equal to Sylar or else there’s really never any true chance of him losing in the end, so they best keep it that way.  I don’t care if he’s too powerful, I like it and I want it that way.  They have to give me something, don’t they?

And to the potentially terrible or incredible:

Dead Nathan.

Dead Nathan.

Sylar as Nathan

I won’t lie to you, my initial reaction was straight up anger at this situation.  I questioned why they were doing it, why they felt the need to keep Adrian Pasdar around (he’s the Ali Larter of the men apparently) and why they’d shelve Zachary Quinto indefinitely.  I mean, how many of us are watching this program just to see him at this point?  They’ll keep me around with powerful Peter but damned if I don’t want his villainous equal on the other side.  So, I was filled with rage, to the point that I couldn’t sleep.  Yep, I was still up at 2.  If I’d given into temptation and written this blog last night it would have been filled with a lot less optimism and a lot more expletives.  But I thought about it and I see how very delicious it could be.

Our favorite serial killer isn't too far buried, it seems.

Our favorite serial killer isn't too far buried, it seems.

As I mentioned above, there’s the possibility that Tracy could go after Nathan and bring out Sylar.  He’s in there, we know that based upon him knowing that clock was incorrect and being fascinated by it.  So we get to wait and anticipate the moment that the fascinating killer returns.  Will Matt’s control diminish, will he slip, will he be racked with guilt and admit something to Peter?  Many ways to go there as well.

When he comes back, not if, families are going to be ripped apart by the lies.  No way does Peter forgive Angela for not telling him that his beloved brother died.  Ditto for Claire with Daddy #1 and Daddy #2.  There is a lot of potential to be mined, even if I don’t like not seeing Sylar’s face week in and week out.

Do I think they’ll go to the depths this story could have?  I hope so, HRG and Angela in particular would rock the story.  I don’t know that I trust them to do it, but the potential will keep me watching.  Nathan’s death could take Peter a lot darker very quickly.  That I would really love.  So, I’ve talked myself down some and I will be back next season, hoping that my favorite character returns quickly to go head to head with my other favorite.  Such pretty.  I hope this is not an error of epic proportions, but I guess we won’t know that until the fall.

Coolest title placement ever.

Coolest title placement ever.

No need to tinker with the title this week, Heroes had it dead on.  And, as one would expect, having a Sylarcentric episode is a good way to win me back.  Of course, they tempered that with Hiro but Sylar’s awesomeness did win out.  Upon first viewing, I wasn’t actually sure how I felt about the episode overall.  I think I was a little over the “family issues” what with my Supernatural rewatch, Lost, Veronica Mars…I thought I’d had my fill.  But on second viewing I was able to get caught up in Sylar’s struggle to find himself.  Of course, a lot of this felt like a rip off of Ben’s arc on Lost, complete with convo with dead relative seeking forgiveness.  But each of those men is special in his own way so I shan’t get overly upset about it.

It would be an interesting character study to compare Ben and Sylar, someday maybe when their arcs are complete (and both are likely dead) I can do it.  I won’t do it justice, but I’ll try.  It’s funny that last week Jerk pointed out Lost taking a shot at Heroes and this week Heroes felt like they’d borrowed a couple of Lost story lines.  Of course, few things are really original and I’m sure they’ve been done elsewhere as well, it was just interesting.  Like Desmond last season, Sylar had to find a constant in order to hold on to himself.  Or to life, in Desmond’s case.  Both men were told to find a constant by someone else, Daniel in Desmond’s case and Danko in Sylar’s.  Sylar was able to find his in his dead mother while Des found his in Penny.  That was one of the more romantic things we’ve ever seen on Lost and not quite comparable to Sylar pulling a Norman Bates and morphing back and forth between himself and momma, but it was interesting.

Sylar helped himself to a pretty power and announced his presence loudly.

Sylar helped himself to a pretty power and announced his presence loudly.

Before I get ahead of myself, I must mention the awesomeness that was this weeks title.  Sylar carving I Am Sylar into his arm with Chapter 11 above it was just made of cool.  Anyway, he woke up as Agent Taub and was none too pleased about it, so he proceeded to keep marching about town as himself.  This made Danko angry, as Sylar is supposed to be dead and not be appearing on surveillance cameras.  Sylar argued with him a little but went ahead and went after the next target on the list, Tom Martin.  He can apparently explode things just by looking at them and thinking about it.  Sylar found that pretty cool, so you can imagine what happened next.  Danko and co came in, along with Agent Taub and saw I Am Sylar written on the wall in blood.  Hilariously, Sylar as Taub says, “Look at that, what an ego.”  Hee.  Danko was not nearly as amused as I was.

Sylar did make him happy by telling him that Rebel was still in town though and giving him a lead on him.  Happily he found Micah on his own and Micah appealed to his “specialness” telling him that he and he alone could save them all.  Sylar liked that, as he’s apt to do whenever he’s told he’s special, and helped Micah get away by morphing into him and getting shot and disappearing in the water.   Danko didn’t seem too suspicious of this, though he could have been covering.  Dunno.

Sylar's constant is his not so dearly departed mother.

Sylar's constant is his not so dearly departed mother.

Sylar let Micah stay at his place wherein he got to witness the morphing between mother and son as he argued with her over letting Micah live and not knowing who he was.  I loved Micah’s “psycho!!!” expression in reaction but he was pretty calm when Sylar confronted him and told him to get out or he’d kill him.  He pointed out that Sylar could turn into Nathan Petrelli and change things and Sylar got that look on.  He found his purpose, clearly.

Sylar finds Nathan's DNA...really glad he didn't brush his teeth to morph though.

Sylar finds Nathan's DNA...really glad he didn't brush his teeth to morph though.

While hunting around Nathan’s office to find some DNA, Sylar started talking to Mom again and she told him she forgave him for killing her, he didn’t mean it.  He pointed out that he did mean it but she forgave him anyway.  He killed the only woman who ever loved him and he actually is sorry about that.  That seems to have been enough for Sylar to get his Nathan on and he finds a toothbrush and that’s done.  Nathan shows up to confront himself and Sylar talks to him about how much he hates who he is.  Nathan says it was people like him that made him go to the president but Sylar isn’t much hearing that as he is about to cut him.  Danko bursts in though and takes Nathan down with his electrodes.  Sylar is displeased and refuses to go along with Danko’s plans to turn back into Taub and go get the others.  Danko then stabs him in the head with a knife and it looks like Sylar is down for the count.

Sylar is now apparently really and truly unstoppable.

Sylar is now apparently really and truly unstoppable.

But not so much, really, because Sylar gets back up and complains about that hurting.  Danko’s a little stunned and a lot frightened in that moment, isn’t he?  Clearly, all this morphing has changed Sylar’s DNA enough that he’s no longer able to be brought down by the one accepted method of defeating him.  This would be a major problem for everyone, wouldn’t it?  I mean, he has no weakness now, right?  Other than the occasional mommy issue I guess!

I’m going to say right here and now that if Danko lives more than 5 or 10 minutes into next week I’m gonna be mad.  Sylar needs to end him, and pronto.  I don’t see him standing for Danko’s orders anymore, not now that he’s found himself again.  So he needs to off him and then do what he’s going to do.  And I still think one of those things he’s going to do is kill Nathan.  Previews of Angela’s screaming and him saying “Claire’s going to be mad at me” seem to enforce that, but we’ll see.

I could talk about the rest of the stuff that happened, but it’s pretty pointless.  Hiro is still being a dumbass and Matt seems to have forgotten all about Daphne in the wake of finding his son and ex-wife again.  Fine, whatever.  I’m glad he’s going to rejoin the fight though, interested to see what is coming for him based on some of Grunberg’s comments.  I am not remotely interested in the interview in which Fuller said that Hiro was going to have some major arc next year though.  That just ruined my day.  They need to kill him and move on.  I am so tired of that useless buffoon at this point.

I don’t want to ruin my mood talking about him though.  I also had to laugh at Mohinder being captured right where we left him, in the dark looking through stuff at his dad’s old concentration camp.  I know that’s not what it really exactly was but that’s what it looked like and kinda what it became, so there you go.  Poor Mohinder, so pretty and still so very dim.  He didn’t even react!  God.  I really am quite grateful that my future is not in the heroes hands!  HRG and Angela and Claire were all taken in as well.  Looks like only Peter, Matt, Hiro and Ando are free.  Doom.

Next week we get to see the Sylar/Claire thing play out, which should be interesting, and also see if Nathan can get to the president before Sylar does.  I’m sure he will, but I still think he’ll die.  Not that I don’t like him, I just think he’s going to be the sacrifice Mohinder was yammering about at the end of the episode.  He started it and he’ll finish it but I don’t think he’ll live to see it end.  That’s my prediction.  I usually suck at these things but we’ll know soon enough!

Two Dankos? I'd rather have two Sylars!

Two Dankos? I'd rather have two Sylars!

Well, I knew this shape shifting business was going to confuse me, I was prepared for it, but I wasn’t prepared for it to be quite so soon and quite so frequently.  I think I have it figured out now, but I hope that Sylar dials back on it some, if only because I miss seeing his pretty face when he’s busy being other people!  Not a win!  I think I’m going to go back to my tried and true list of what I liked and what I didn’t this week because I thought this episode was a bit of a mixed bag, probably helped by the return of Hiro and Mohinder to the forefront.  Never good for me, those two!  On to the list!

Noah really lost it this episode.

Noah really lost it this episode.

What I liked:

  • The chapter title being on the body bag carrying faux Sylar.  That was a nice effect.
  • HRG being suspicious of Danko.  I’m glad that he didn’t buy into dead Sylar at all.  He wouldn’t be HRG if he didn’t test the theory.
  • Vengeful Matt.  Oh yes, it was good to see that guy again, taking charge and attempting to kick ass.  Of course he stuck at the point when it came to killing the girlfriend, but he wouldn’t be Matt if he had killed her.  Still loved him working the mind control on Danko and ferreting out his girlfriend and telling her of his lies.
  • While I may have gotten a little overtired of all Sylar’s disguises, I did enjoy his joy in each one.  The hubris he showed as Danko, the attitude he gave Sandra with her divorce papers…Sylar characteristics leaked out and that was cool.
  • Okay, the face that Ando had to make to make baby Matt Parkman happy did amuse me.
  • Coyote Sands.  Well we have a direction that most everybody is headed at least.  HRG, the Petrelli’s, I assume Parkman and Hiro and Mohinder.  Maybe, just maybe they’re all going to go come together and figure things out!  I can hope!
  • HRG holding the gun on Sandra thinking that she was still Sylar.  I kinda loved that it took Lyle calling with a Mr. Muggles related question in order for him to be convinced that it was his wife he had a gun on.  Of course, by then it was too late and she didn’t want to talk to him anymore, but that was well done.  HRG really was awesome the whole episode running the gamut of emotions.  I was very impressed.
  • Matt using mind control on Danko to make him tell Elana that he was lying about his whole life; loved watching him fight doing it but not being able to.  And I loved her realizing that he was willing to watch her die before giving up his hunt.
  • Hiro stopping the bullet from killing Parkman.  So, he has his uses from time to time, if he does more stuff like that I might grow to like him again.
  • Well, at least we have parallels.  Everybody’s losing their love.  Danko, Parkman and HRG…poetic justice I guess.
  • HRG pretending to be Sylar and giving Danko his files as a test to prove that he knew about Sylar.  While it messed further with my head, I enjoyed HRG’s brief moment of power and control.  Didn’t last for long though!
  • Matt meeting his son.  It was cute.  I’m a sucker for dads and their babies, so this one was easy.  But…I’d have liked to see him ask some questions there, instead of just accepting it.
  • Good move on Sylar faking being really and truly dead and making the ninja’s think that HRG had murdered one of their own.  I did love his telling Danko that he squeezed out some extra blood for show.
  • Sylar’s irritation at nearly being killed, coupled with him spitting out the bullet.  At least this week Danko showed he was thinking on his feet more again.  After Sylar was shot and he pretended not to know what HRG was talking about, it was a good move.
  • Danko and HRG leaving messages to their non-receptive women at almost the same time.  Again, nice parallel.  I don’t know that Sandra/HRG are done forever but Elana seems to have come to her senses anyway.
  • HRG is reunited with Claire.  I may not like her, but he does and he clearly needs her right now, so I guess that’s good, since we’ll never be without her.
Matt Parkman meets Matt Parkman.

Matt Parkman meets Matt Parkman.

What I disliked:

  • I said it above but it bears repeating, Sylar was Danko, Sandra and some random ninja dude this episode.  That’s too much.  Trying to figure out who was whom hurt my head, hence the blog title!
  • Baby hijinks.  You knew it was coming.  I’m thankful that Parkman has met his son if only to keep Hiro and Ando off babysitting duty for too long.
  • Promise me an Angela episode and then just give me a teaser at the end?  Not cool.
  • Japanese Texas Truckers.  It’s like they tried to figure out someone more annoying than Hiro.  They succeeded.  Kudos.  Of course he was around less, so he was less bothersome.
  • I don’t like to see HRG lose his mind the way he did but I did think it was well done.  I’m glad he’s headed to Angela and co.
  • Angela making them dig up the bodies instead of just telling us whatever happened at Coyote Sands.  I mean, it’s clear as day that people with powers were killed there, so why not just spit it out?  I guess we have to wait until next week.
Can you blame baby Parkman for crying with these two in charge of his well being?

Can you blame baby Parkman for crying with these two in charge of his well being?

So that was that.  I guess I weighed more in on the liked side than disliked, I just found the episode a little confusing with the many faces of Sylar.  On rewatch, it was easier to tell when it was him, of course, I knew that this time around, but I would say clues are given in body language and attitude.  I can learn to deal with it, I guess, but I hope they don’t overuse it.

All politicians have skeletons buried in their closet, guess it's fitting that Nathan should have to dig some up.

All politicians have skeletons buried in their closet, guess it's fitting that Nathan should have to dig some up.

Things are finally coming together, heroes are uniting and with only 3 episodes left for the year, that needed to happen.  I’m looking forward to whatever Angela might deign to reveal to us next week.  I love the woman but she drives me insane.  Still, I think we’re going to get something at least!  I look forward to it.

They say that politics makes for strange bedfellows.

They say that politics makes for strange bedfellows.

So it seemed to me that Heroes was all about bonds; either repairing old ones or forming new ones or forming ones that should have been there all along but weren’t due to craptastic parenting.  Angela finally let Peter in, as much as Angela does anyway.  Nathan and Claire spent some quality time together and got to know one another better.  And of course our beloved serial killer has taken up with a new, much more formidable partner.  Watching those two play off of each other is going to be enjoyable, if this episode was anything to go by.

MAtrelli is clearly in distress if she'll let herself look like this.

MAtrelli is clearly in distress if she'll let herself look like this.

After being saved by her son, Angela decided the place to be was the church she used to attend.   She sat there and prayed and refused to tell Peter anything, because you know that’s how Angela rolls.  She apologizes for how they raised the Petrelli boys, supporting them but not giving them support.  Peter had a nice emo moment of asking God why he was given his power to help and now was being hunted for it.  He asked for a sign and then the candles went out and in stormed the feds and HRG.  I guess that’s a sign huh?  Of what I am not sure.  He and Angela went and hid in the confessional, which I found hilarious since Angela confesses nothing.  While there she does tell him that she was once idealistic like he was but nobody believed her and she ended up resorting to lies and manipulation and betrayal to save the world.  Visiting the church seemed to have served her well, for she had enough of an epiphany to inform Peter that they needed to go see her sister, his aunt.  It was rather clear by Peter’s expression that he didn’t know he had an aunt.  Shocker, that!  But it got me hoping again…maybe Angela’s sister is Sylar’s real mom?  Yes, I still refuse to give up on a family tie between those two, why do you ask?  Anyway, HRG found them but pretended he didn’t and got the feds off their backs for this day.  Off to Aunties!

Who doesn't bond over tequila shots?

Who doesn't bond over tequila shots?

In Mexico, Claire and Nathan were shacking up together and causing pervs far and wide to get excited.  Okay, it was one perv but still.  They had only money for one night (in Mexico? I doubt that) so Nathan decided to challenge 4 frat guys to a tequila shots contest.  Apparently that’s how he got through his military service.  Fun!  Anyway, why he took on 4 is beyond me, but it gave Claire the opportunity to step in when Dad was unable to finish the job.  She drank frat boy under the table and seemed to have to fake drunk once but appeared unaffected.  Is that part of her immortality thing?  Beer bongs for everyone!  She dragged dear old drunken Dad back to their room and he gave her a speech about how he was going to make everything alright again.  Sober Nathan didn’t have the same conviction that drunk Nathan had though and Claire stormed off after telling him how fantastic he was supposed to be, how he was superman and could fly.  Nathan made amends by getting her back the necklace she sold to get them the tequila cash and convinced her to stick with him and help him make it right.  Father/daughter bonding at its finest!

Sylar likes showing off for his new partner.

Sylar likes showing off for his new partner.

Of course the most interesting bonds are the ones that form between the unlikeliest of partners.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about Sylar pairing up with Danko, as it has been my greatest hope that Sylar would be the one to kill Danko and save everybody, all while not seeking any redemption for who he is.  Not that this partnership means that Sylar ultimately won’t kill Danko either, I’m sure once they have everybody captured or dead, Sylar would kill him as the only one who knows he’s alive.  Not that that’ll happen, but I still hold on to a head cutting in Danko’s future.

Danko and co are after some guy we’ve never heard of, James Martin, a professor whose power is unknown.  He sends 3 guys after him and they all end up shot in the head and HRG is none too pleased.  He’s told Danko several times that pairing up with someone with abilities is the best way to capture people with abilities but of course he didn’t want to hear that.  He heads over to investigate and when he returns to his car, Sylar’s kicking it in the backseat to the tune of “Runaway”.  I love that they’re giving him theme music this year!  He offers partnership but Danko isn’t quite ready to accept it yet and before he can shoot Sylar, he disappears.

Who doesn't like a head for a present?

Who doesn't like a head for a present?

Danko goes back to his office and some guy comes in to compliment him on his speech to his men about finding the one who killed some of them.  While he’s pondering that he gets a phone call from Sylar telling him that his quarry is a shapeshifter and there’s a fourth headless body on the roof.  Danko opens the package to find a head, the head of the guy who just complimented him on his pretty speech.  How very Seven of them!  A chase ensues and he manages to get some shots off at the asskisser.  All asskissers should be shot!  He gets away in a crowd of people as a new form, a janitor he happened to run past on the way down the stairs.  I must say, shapeshifting is a cool power but it looks gross, like bugs are under their skin as they change.  Ick!

Danko goes back to the shapeshifter’s apartment and happens upon Sylar again, who is there to show him just how you find a person with power.  He studies the pictures and discovers some matches of a club the dude goes to and picks up chicks as various men of power.  All that seeking out of people with powers has made our little killer quite the detective.  After a bit of a pissing contest, they head to the club together and see the shapeshifter is there as none other than Danko himself.  He’s totally getting action which you know has to burn Danko since he doesn’t appear to get any on his own.  Sylar’s amused and tells Danko that he’s a better him than he is.  They’re spotted and a chase ensues and he bursts out the door, except that it’s the real Danko and Sylar is behind him.  They chat for a second and then Danko shoots him before fake Sylar can kill him and the real Sylar appears and is disappointed because he killed the dude.  But Danko tells him he didn’t kill him and asks if he can take his power without the messy head cutting.  Sylar smiles and leans in close.

Sylar checks out his old face after dropping one of his new ones.

Sylar checks out his old face after dropping one of his new ones.

Next thing we see is HRG seeing Sylar in a body bag with a knife in the back of his head.  Danko looks all sorts of pleased with himself and heads to his car where he awaits the female who zipped up the body bag.  She slides in and then after some facial contortions we have our Sylar back.  Yep, he zipped up his own body bag.  Danko points out that in the end he’ll be the only one with any powers and Sylar grins over that one and says “funny how that works” while the Rolling Stones “We Gotta Get Outta This Place.”  Again, awesome use of music since it’s playing as Nathan and Claire leave Mexico and Peter and Angela leave the church and Sylar and Danko leave the club.

I definitely liked this episode better than the last one.  Things happen and story advanced.  The Petrelli’s are headed back together and a new relative is set to enter next week.  Danko’s made a deal with the devil and now Sylar is going to be after our Heroes once again.  You must admit, he’s at his best when he’s hunting his fellow powered people!  I can’t wait til next week, it’s Angelacentric and they say we’re going to find out some of her secrets, at least the ad did!  Is it Monday yet?  I never look forward to Mondays but I’m already ready for the next one!

The true leader of the Heroes!

The true leader of the Heroes!

So there was a lot of hype going into last night’s Heroes:  Bryan Fuller was back and the show was going to return to form!  Strike up the band and roll out the red carpet!  Well a funny thing happened on the way to the celebration; the episode totally fell flat for me.  Now I will say that part of it could have been the inclusion of all of my least favorite characters, minus Claire, and the absence of my faves but for a brief appearance by Peter.  I make allowances that that might have factored into my lack of excitement with the episode.  Still, though, I thought it was much ado about nothing.

We found out that Micah is indeed Rebel, long specced by most of the Heroes watching population.  I’m not disappointed by this, I was glad to see the kid again though he’s turned into Walt from Lost.  The Heroes need him on their side since he’s smarter than all of them combined.  Still, the reveal fell flat for me because of the focus on Tracy making herself bait and leading HRG to Rebel.  You knew darn well that she would sacrifice herself to save Micah so there was no surprise factor.  I did like the ice illusion and Danko shooting her and shattering her, but since she winked I figure she’s not really dead and will be back.  That sucks.  I am quite done with her and have been from the get go.

In other death news, Daphne finally bit it.  What was the point of all that really?  Matt gets her out of the facility and takes her to a doctor but she dies anyway?  I was completely flummoxed by her waking up and acting like she and Parkman didn’t have that relationship we never got to see and then the Paris thing.  Luckily when he started flying I realized he was planting stuff in her head (tho why would he plant the relationship was nothing part?)  I guess the dance in the sky over Paris was pretty in a very cheesy way, I just don’t get why they went ahead and killed her off anyway.  Why not have her die when she was shot?

Cute or not, this kid would drive me batty.

Cute or not, this kid would drive me batty.

I guess part of it was leading up to the reveal of baby Matt Parkman and his ex Janice, who I do not want to revisit again.  Now that Hiro and Ando have absconded with her baby, maybe she’ll disappear.  Sigh.  Sure.  Seems Daphne’s death brought on memories of the ex so I’m sure we’ll be stuck with her again.  Oh and the baby gave Hiro back his freezing time power, hooray.  He can be a hero again!  I was sooooo waiting for that to happen!  I’m so excited that he can think he’s going to save the day again!  Yes, that was sarcasm, why do you ask?  Also, Heroes, never ever rip off a beloved ET moment again, particularly not with Hiro.  Ugh.

And the baby hijinks with Hiro already suck.

And the baby hijinks with Hiro already suck.

In an aside, if I had a baby that had the power to turn on all his toys at once and drive me absolutely insane?  I wouldn’t go looking for him when he disappeared, that’s all I’m saying.  I love kids but I don’t think anybody could endure that one constantly.   Oh, and I demand that Peter get his hands on that kid and turn on some of his cooler powers.  If Hiro can get some of his back, so can Peter and he’s quite clearly going to need them based on previews.

Peter's still a momma's boy at heart.

Peter's still a mommas boy at heart.

Angela had the ninjas hot on her tail and met with Swoozie Kurtz who gave her attitude and then some cash.  Didn’t help her as she got trapped in an elevator and was being brought down to the feds, but when the door opened, there was Peter with his arms around Mommy and whisking her away to the Statue of Liberty to hang for awhile.  I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the two of them; she was worrying to HRG that she might have pushed Peter away permanently so she has some atoning to do.  I’m also pretty mad at her for being willing to throw Micah under the bus to save her own hide.  You gotta love her mothering instincts don’t ya?  Throw the kids to the wolves!  She does make me laugh.  I wonder what she’d do with Matt Parkman Jr. and all those noisy toys?

Awesome shot of Peter and Angela looking out over NYC.

So, on top of the confusing Matt/Daphne thing, we had Danko chilling in his apartment shaving with no Sylar anywhere in sight.  I was quite perturbed that my boy was not present and was not threatening and/or killing the dude.  Instead, he sets off the Danko’s alarms and he heads into the living room to find Doyle the Puppetmaster strung up like one of his marionettes.  Sylar gifted him with Doyle as a sign of good faith I guess, cause next week they’re actually meeting and Sylar is promising to help him round up the others so he can be the only special one.  Sigh.  Sylar, my love, we’d come so far and then you go and do this to me?  Why do you destroy my hopes of you and Peter teaming up to take on the government and crushing everyone in your way?  So uncool.  I’ll wait and see how it plays out but I’m quite unhappy about this unlikely union.  Still, it has me looking forward to next week so I guess that’s something.

Sylar's idea of the perfect gift.

Sylar's idea of the perfect gift.

So that was the big stuff this week.  Daphne and Tracy died, but probably only Daphne permanently.  Hiro got a power.  Matt & Mohinder are out and about again.  Peter saved Angela.  Sylar helped the enemy.  I am interested to see what Angela has to say to her boy and to see what Sylar is going to do (he still better kill Danko for me down the road, this is not too much to ask!) and to see what’s next for Matt that hopefully doesn’t involve changing diapers.  I loved him working the mind mojo on the ninja soldiers and the doctors.  Such a cool power.  If nothing else, I appreciated that!  I also loved Mohinder getting the tables turned on him by Danko yet again…silly, pretty, dumb Mohinder!  They really do need Micah to lead them all, don’t they?

Sylar meets his father.

Sylar meets his father.

Last night’s Heroes was appropriately titled Shades of Gray and I don’t feel the need to change it as it was perfect for the episode. It played on the Sylar/father thing but also played into Nathan, Angela, HRG & Claire’s storylines. It was a pretty good episode, good enough that I didn’t even miss Peter but not good enough that I didn’t groan when I saw Hiro at the end. We’ll discuss that later though.

Sylar caught up with Solomon Gray at his taxidermy house and went in announcing that he was there to kill him. Daddy told him to go ahead, he didn’t have much time left anyway and turned around to show himself attached to some sort of oxygen tank. He has cancer and will die imminently so he’s not exactly afraid of death. This gives Sylar pause and he asks his father why he killed his mother and abandoned him. He actually ponders this for a minute and then announces that he doesn’t really remember because it wasn’t important to him. Jeez. Talk about a knife in the heart! Then he launches into a commentary on their powers and how their pray was weak and unimportant and blah blah. He gets Sylar to kill a rabbit, much to my utter irritation and sadness. I can watch Sylar cut open heads all day but killing animals gets to me. Yes, I am weird. Anyhow, Sylar cuts himself and shows his father his little immortality power and brags about how he won’t be dying or getting any older. Dad seems to poo poo this and says he’ll just suffer forever then, but it’s a cover for when he shoots two arrows into Sylar’s chest pinning him to a wall. He then uses some mind mojo on him that’s supposed to paralyze him. Tripp & I went to commercial concerned, not that Sylar would die but that Luke would show up and save him and thus we’d be stuck with him for longer. Fortunately that did not come to pass. Sylar was playing possum and he removes the arrows and then uses a hose to choke Daddy for awhile. Solomon asks him to give him his power, he won’t have to die to do it after all but Sylar tells him no, he’s not going to give his gift to Daddy. Then Solomon asks him to kill him but Sylar won’t do that either, he’d rather let him live out his days miserable and in pain. He takes off and Solomon is left to his cigarettes and his dead animals.

Nathan wins the pissing match, Danko wins the war?

Nathan wins the pissing match, Danko wins the war?

Nathan, meanwhile, got to Matt and helped him with defusing the bomb, thanks to an assist by Rebel, then punched him and turned him over to the ninja soldiers. He went head to head with Danko and seemed to have won, the Prez authorized Danko’s removal from the project and HRG’s promotion. Danko pulled a gun on HRG and Nathan as they were heading to meet the president but instead of shooting Nathan, he shot the glass and pushed him out and watched him fly away. Now he knows Nathan has a power, which he suspected but couldn’t prove. Interestingly, the camera winked out while all this was going on, so it appears that Rebel was making sure nobody saw Nathan’s flyboy act.  Prior to that Danko went to see Angela to try to get some info but everybody knows that getting information out of Angela is pretty much impossible. She reminds him of some incident in Angola where a lot of people died and that gets him to back the hell off on looking at the rest of the Petrelli’s, until of course he sees Nathan’s flying act. Nathan flies out to California (how the hell fast can he go by the way?) and is there to scoop Claire to safety when she gets the text from Rebel that her free pass has been revoked.

That free pass was revoked because Claire helped the Puppetmaster, Doyle, get away. She spent the first half of the show soul searching about that, trying to decide if she wanted to cross that line and help someone that she disliked or not. She got a brief job at the comic book store which was pretty cute, all the guys were totally into her despite her looking rather weird and plastic yesterday. Doyle’s dubbing of her as Barbie was very appropriate. She ended up saving Doyle from the feds and giving him papers to escape and start his new life. She asked if he planned on being good and he gave her a rather evil smile, so I think he was putting on a bit of show for her to get her to help him. Good, I can’t see the Puppetmaster as a good character, nor do I want to.

Angela's reaction to the "threat" of Danko.

Angela's reaction to the "threat" of Danko.

How beautiful was it when HRG directed Danko to Angela and she just basically smacked him down like a red headed stepchild? Slurping her oysters and treating him like a servant. I adore that woman, despite her apparent sock fetish. What is up with that? And what are she and HRG doing exactly? I am dying to know…I restate my demand that we get an Angela episode soon.

Sadly, Hiro showed back up but fortunately it wasn’t until the last couple minutes of the episode. He and Ando showed up at the address to save Matt Parkman and found instead a rattled babysitter with an infant. Turns out that he’s Matt Parkman…yes, apparently the baby is Matt’s or at least named after him. I thought it had been established that his wife was pregnant with that other guy’s baby but whatever. All I know is we’re stuck with Hiro attending to a baby. It will of course be played for wacky hijinks and just serve to annoy the majority of the viewers all the more. At least he’ll be on the same mentality with his charge, I suppose. Sigh. Will Hiro ever grow up?

Sylar leaves a present for Danko and lies in wait.

Sylar leaves a present for Danko and lies in wait.

I save the best for last because, hooray, Sylar and his rabbit took off and went to Danko’s apartment. How great was it when Danko walked in and saw that stuffed bunny staring at him and Sylar hidden around the corner? I guess he’s decided to go after the tough prey after all. I love it! And I’m mad that I have to wait 2 weeks to see that get resolved. 2 weeks! Another week of good show and even better cliffhanger, so Heroes has me completely absorbed and excited again. Bring it on!
