Robgettingdressed

Creative license, putting a hot Rob pic on fanfic blog. So so pretty.

Well it’s been ages since my last Twific post but I haven’t stopped reading, despite my rather busy writing schedule.  I can’t say when the next post will happen now that TV and writing are taking precedence but I intend to keep posting these as long as I keep reading.  I’ve got some really good ones to recommend this time out, so happy reading!

High Anxiety by EdwardsBloodType.  I really, really love this story.  Bella moves to Forks to live with Charlie after some mysterious scandal drove her from living with her mom and Phil.  She takes meds to deal with anxiety attacks.  Edward lives down the street from her, he’s also on anxiety meds for an issue in his past that drove the family to move from Chicago.  He’s not allowed to touch a female, at all, and of course he and Bella want each other.  Talk about a slow burn romance!  Jasper likes Bella as well so there’s some infighting between the brothers.  Really good story, love their bonding in the treehouse over weed.

Landscapes by lambcullen.  Bella is a talented artist that Edward wants to come study at this art school he runs, The Dairy.  He’s an ass who has major issues after the death of his parents.  There’s a lot of hate and heat between the two that eventually boils over.  Edward also doesn’t get along with his sister, Alice (calls her Doom, hehe) but she and Bella bond.  It’s different, really well written and compelling.

The Boy By The Window by hopefulhappenings09.  Do you like your Edward manipulative and possibly psychotic?  Yeah, me too.  On occasion anyway.  Bella moves in next door to Edward, who is living alone after his parents death.  He watches her for a month and eventually draws her in, pretty much telling her she belongs to him.  But she draws him in as well and some of his barriers may be coming down at her hands.  Edward was once really close with Jasper but they had a falling out, Alice was caught in between.  Rose is knocked up with Emmett’s kid and yeah they’re all in high school.  This one is twisty and on edging on dark but quite interesting.

Clipped Wings & Inked Armor by hunterhunting.  Up to date link, another fic pulled and moved.  Another Tattward and Inkella story.  I don’t care for all the markings and piercings but the stories that come out are compelling.  Bella is haunted by the deaths of everyone she loved in a plane crash.  She meets Edward, a tattoo artist, and wants him to do a design on her back to represent said people.  She has a lot of demons over this situation and they fall but she won’t tell him everything…will it drive them apart?  He also has a lot of guilt over his parents murders.  Good story but if you can’t get past all the piercing/tatt stuff I understand, I like it despite that.

Secrets Don’t Keep Friends by KTBass.  Bella loves Jasper.  Jasper is with Alice despite some major feelings for Bella.  Alice knows that Bella loves Jasper but she ignores that because she is sure Jasper is right for her.  Edward arrives in town and he and Bella start to bond.  Jasper doesn’t like that and sets out to sabotage them.  Bella is torn between going with her old love and getting a chance with him vs. exploring something new with Edward.  A very good read.

Salacious Behavior & Earnest Speaking by ThisColony.  Bella’s been in a give and no take relationship with Jasper for years.  She meets Edward at the opening of one of Jasper’s club.  They want each other but she’s under Jasper’s thumb.  Jasper thinks he loves her but doesn’t know how to tell her that yet he sees other women.  They break up and she and Edward move forward but Jasper still wants her.  Very interesting dynamic between B&J here, twisted type relationship, Edward is the healthy choice but will she do what’s healthy?

To Desire by Erestellea.  Pretty much Twilight with advanced maturity.  Edward and Bella are making out in the gym a day or so into school.  Hasn’t been updated in awhile so not sure what the deal is but it’s a fun read.

Ethan Church by dryler.  Bella is asked to write the memoirs of a reclusive author, Ethan Church.  He’s dying and wants to tell his story.  While there she meets/sees a ghost that sounds like Edward.  But Ethan himself sounds like Edward.  Which one is Edward, are they both?  It’s intriguing and well written and somewhat confusing but really really good.  I have no answers yet but I love each new chapter she gives me.

Scotch, Gin & The New Girl by jandco.  This is a rameau rec but I had to re-rec it in case it got lost in our commentary on my last blog.  This is basically an ode to Cruel Intentions, a movie that I love beyond belief.  Rose bets Edward that he can’t land the new girl, Bella.  He bonds with her and wants her but he wants to win the bet as well.  Meanwhile Rose bets Bella that she will sleep with Edward, Bella wants to win that bet so he’s trying to get her into bed and she’s trying to avoid.  Very well written, push and pull.  Offputting beginning with Edward wanting to bed both Rose & Alice but get past that and you’ll love it.

Tie Me Down To This World by Struck Upon A Star.  This got mentioned in the comments on my last blog but needed a place here.  Alice & Jasper story.  Both of them are in the hospital, him badly burned, her hurt in a car accident with no memory of her life or anything about herself.  The bond through the walls of the hospital.  Much angst and heartbreak follow but it’s a beautiful story with the best love scene ever.  That’s enough, read it even if you’re primarily an E&B fan like I am, it’s worth it.

The Port Angeles Players by WriteOnTime.  Primarily a fluffy one.  Bella and Jasper are English teachers at the high school and get roped into trying out for a play.  Alice comes along and bonds with Jas.  Bella gets the lead and Edward is the male lead.  Instant sparks and mostly a fluffy love story.  Lighter fare after much heavy stuff.

Work In Progess by araeo.  Bella works at one of those Brazilian meat places as a bartender but has to step in one day as one of the sword brandishers.  Of course that’s when she meets Edward, and Emmett, who is dubbed Meat Sweats which is awesome.  Mostly a funny fic, some angst as Edward is a recovering alcoholic carrying a lot of guilt around but it’s not too heavy and has a lot of laughs.

Bad Habit by AmeryMarie.  Flips back and forth between present day and 5 years ago when Bella befriended Alice and met her manwhore brother, Edward.  They were told to stay away from each other but were drawn anyway.  Lots of fighting and a hidden relationship that apparently dragged on for a couple of years but may be on the verge of ending.  Angsty as hell but good.

The Caged Bird by Kristen Nicole.  I LOVE this fic!  LOVE!  Bella has been raised by ultra religious Renee and goes to a private school where she’s picked on.  The only thing she’s really allowed to do is work at the public library.  There she meets Edward, serving community service for lewd behavior.  hehe  He’s into her and vice versa but she’s innocent as the day with an inquisitive little mind.  The first time they do sexual stuff, for instance, when he orgasms she thinks she killed him because he lays there like the dead and when she finds out he’s alive she asks him what that white goo is.  It’s hysterical but sweet at the same time.

Faking It by spanglemaker9.  Bella’s band has won a reality show contest and they’re the darlings of the media.  Edward is a huge movie star with a bad reputation in need of a makeover.  Their managers get them to agree to be a fake couple to keep her in the limelight and fix his rep.  They fall for each other eventually but the public eye can be too much…mostly light but some angst.

Reluctance by eye ree.  Edward is a rather weird guy who wears a beanie and is really into the environment.  Bella sees him on Alice’s facebook and wants to meet him.  They hook up but he’s reluctant to open up to her, hence the title.  She pushes, he pulls back.  He nearly screws everything up and has to try to win her back because of course he loves her, he just doesn’t know how to show it.

The Coven by phoenixhunter47.  Different one.  Bella is going to Yale.  While there she starts researching secret societies and catches the attention of two of them.  The Volturi are who you think they are.  There’s another group the Cullens are in that seems to have the whole mating thing happening.  Bella and Edward are destined for each other but neither know it.  It’s complicated but very good.

Time And Again by ooohlalaaa  Another that flashes between past and present.  Bella is taken in as a foster kid by the Cullens.  She and Edward bond and hook up.  Alice is in love with Edward and sets out to keep them apart.  Bella and Jasper bond, he knows of her relationship with Edward.  Edward pushes her away and manwhores around.  He eventually leaves and we go to present day when Bella is getting ready to marry Jasper.  Alice reveals that she kept Edward and Bella apart, he’s around and wanting to stop the wedding, Bella can’t decide what to do, Jasper is scared as hell…much angst.

Bloodline by ooohlalaaa.  New take on vamps.  The kids are all at a school and it’s clear that Em and Alice and Rose are vamps but Edward has green eyes.  It seems vamps are sometimes born and not just made in this one.  The Cullen kids turned when it was there time and Edward turns in this after he and Bella fall in love.  She’s seemingly a normal kid but is she?  There’s a threat from the Volturi who don’t like kids with powers.  Very good one.

Mens Rae: A Guilty Mind by forbidden-fruit81.  Edward is a rich author and professor with a live-in girlfriend that he likes to fight with and screw.  One morning after that he wakes up to a dead Tanya.  He thinks he killed her when he choked her while doing her.  Jasper hires Bella to defend him.  He wont’ really defend himself, thinking he’s guilty.  He’s also instantly attracted to Bella and hates himself for that as he’s made his relationship with Tanya into something beautiful in retrospect when it was really rather poisonous.  Really well written and a good mystery.

The Tutor by ItzMegan73.  Bella’s a new kid at school and she’s assigned to tutor Edward in English.  Turns out he can’t read.  They have to hide their tutor/tutee relationship and of course they fall for each other.  Rose is out for sabotage since she’s into Edward.  Alice gets caught in between as she starts liking Bella.  Simple one but not a bad read.

Intersection by Lilybellis.  Bella has a bad past that includes dead little brothers and a sister and stepfather Phil.  Renee hates and blames her for their deaths and Bella pretty much does as well.  She moves to Seattle and meets Edward.  They bond but have to face her past demons in order to move forward.  They turn out to have a sweet connection from their youths.  Cute one.

The Screamers by KiyaRaven.  Edward is a big time rock star on the run from some fans.  He ducks down an alley and meets Bella, a homeless girl.  He ends up knocking her over and giving he a concussion so he takes her to his hotel to fix her up.  His sister/manager Alice is immediately taken by her and hires her as a PR rep as well as fake girlfriend.  She orders them to keep their hands off one another but they can’t.  Edward has an addictive personality, it was drugs and alcohol and sex, it becomes Bella.  Her past is a major issue for them to get over as well.  Hot times, some definite angst, fun inclusion of Robert Pattinson who happens to look like Edward and likes Bella…good read.

The Masque Of The Red Death by Jeesiechreesie.  Do you like your Edward dark?  Very dark?  Very very dark?  I do.  This Edward is an unapologetic killer who enjoys toying with his prey.  He wants Bella and he sets about courting her in his own sick way, starting with killing her mother and then anybody who treats her badly.  She becomes an outcast as everyone thinks she causes these deaths but she handles it pretty well.  It’s fascinating and dark and god help me but I like it too. hehe  Issues.

Elemental by TallulahBelle.  I adore this one.  All our vamps are witches instead.  Bella’s family hauls her back to Forks to live in this community with the rest of the witches.  They all have various affinities, Bella’s is earth and she’s quite powerful although she didn’t know she was a witch.  Something is coming and they need to unite to save the town.  Witches tend to imprint when they turn 18, guess who she imprints with?  Edward is the eventual leader of the witches, very powerful with Air and Water affinity.  Bella also has fire affinity so combined they have all 4.  Very interesting story, intriguing.  Now that they’ve imprinted, they need to be together but Edward was a dick to her pre-imprint so of course she has issues with their pairing but they can’t fight it, it physically tears them up to be apart.

Love Amongst The Ruins by theladyingrey42.  Bella starts working at a library in San Francisco.  Edward is there and they’re attracted to one another but he has a bad past with someone else at the library and can’t act on the attraction.  He’s also in bad physical pain due to an accident when he was a child.  Some real angst in this one but really well written and rather a beautiful love story.

How My Life Was Ruined In 14 Days by moon.witche.  Hilarious.  Bella has her whole life planned down to a T.  She sees The 40 Year Old Virgin and decides she needs to pencil in some sex into her plan so that she doesn’t die a virgin.  She decides to ask Edward to be her partner.  She’s very straight forward about it and he’s taken aback but agrees only if she will let him take her out on a date first.  That doesn’t fit into her plan but she wants the sex so she has to start altering her plan.  Only a few chapters in but it’s awesome and funny.

Tragic Turn by L is a dreamer.  Edward is in a band and one night on the way to a gig he stops to help a girl caught in the rain.  He’s intrigued by her right away and her perfume haunts him.  She goes to private school with his sister Alice and they start hanging out and formally meet.  Instant attraction.  Not really angsty or anything at this point, just a light romance but not too far in so not sure where it will go, Tragic Turn is the band name though and not necessarily indicative of the story at this point.

Alphabet Weekends by the-glory-days.  Edward and Bella have been best friends since the age of 4.  They live together and are bored so decide have sex every Saturday using letters of the alphabet.  Of course they’re in love with one another but don’t realize it until they start getting heavily involved in the sexing.  This one is pretty light and kinda fun.

Type O-Negative by quothme.  Fascinating.  Twilight with a snarky but clueless Bella.  Edward, Alice and Jasper are vamps that move to Forks.  Everyone obsesses over Edward including Bella though she denies it.  He has himself moved from her bio table and sits with Rose (human).  Bella thinks he’s obsessed with Rosalie but he’s really just avoiding her.  They get assigned a project and start spending time and he’s fighting the attraction to Bella but she doesn’t see it.  Good story, not updated in over a month though.

Just Wait by InstantKarmaGirl.  Excellent story.  Bella gets sent to live with Charlie after she steals a car in Arizona.  Turns out that Renee has been abusing her all her life and Charlie didn’t know.  As part of her sentence, she has to attend therapy run by Esme.  Edward and co are all there for various reasons and she and Edward are pair.  He stutters very badly and gets picked on at school.  It’s not said yet but heavily implied that there is abuse in his past as well.  Bella uses drugs and sex to escape, Edward uses music.  They’re starting to spend time together and forging what will likely be an interesting relationship.  Highly recommended.

Okay, I think that’s plenty for now!  I’m sure I’ll add more as we go, in fact I left some off because I couldn’t remember what they were and I didn’t want to reread them right now.  That’s right, I read way too much.  Happy reading and let me know what you think!

Emancipation Proclamation by kharizzmatik.  Link now updated to new location.  I spent 3 days lost in this fic, it’s long as hell and shows no sign of stopping 53 chapters in, so be warned that you need time to dedicate to this one.  But I liked it.  A lot.  Very different from any other fic I’ve read.  I will be honest and admit I read and rejected the description several times before I gave in and started it.  Basically, it’s 2005 and Bella is a slave sold to Carlisle, a powerful mafia figure.  I know, right?  Sounds ridiculous which is what kept me from starting it for so long.  But it works.  He takes her to his home on her 16th birthday, having purchased her from her owner/father, Charles Swan.  The 3 Cullen boys are his kids and of course she and Edward fall in love but it’s even more complicated than master/slave.  There’s ties to the kid’s past that have resulted in Edward’s mother’s being murdered when he was 8 and Bella’s DNA comes up as well (no they’re not related).  I don’t want to give too much away and the honest answer is that 53 chapters in the reader doesn’t know everything yet.  It’s a good story though.  Edward’s a total manwhore who reforms and Bella learns to speak up.  It did change my view of Carlisle for awhile, wasn’t sure if I could ever look at him as the kindly doctor man again after something he did to Bella but I’ve softened a little.  Would love to talk about this one with people who have had/will read it.

A Rough Start by ItzMegan73.  Edward, Jasper and Emmett work in a lumber mill (yeah no Rich Cullen boys here).  Edward finds out that he has a 5 year old son with ex-girlfriend Jessica, who has died.  He goes to get him and they try to forge a relationship.  Bella is a new kindergarten teacher who can’t understand why little Anthony keeps getting dropped off way before school starts.  She sends a letter home to Edward which pisses him off and needless to say they don’t get off on the right foot.  It’s only 12 chapters in and the relationship has progressed to friendship with interest.  It’s sweet, with Edward and his son trying to get to know one another and Bella having an effortless relationship with him.

I’ve been promising it for awhile now and I’m finally ready to do another fanfiction blog.  My other blog is still amazingly popular (and I’m truly flattered that people are coming here to find fic to read) so I figured a second one would probably go over well as well.  I got a lot of these from the Twilight Indie award nominees.  Some of the fics I’ve read lately have taken a decidedly darker turn so there’s an interesting mix to be found here.  I will keep adding as I read more, meanwhile I hope everyone finds something to enjoy!

Bare by stella luna sky.  Bella is the new girl at school and Edward immediately insults her by telling her she’s not beautiful.  They start communicating via her notebook, him through pictures and her through words. Romance develops.

The Woods are Lovely, Dark & Deep by bananapancakes7.  I’m not quite sure where this one is going yet.  Bella comes to Forks and stays at an Inn where she meets Edward Masen.  He is staying in the room next to her and haunted by some kind of nightmares.  Both are human, at least right now, though the Cullens are vampires so I don’t know.  Bella and Edward are drawing closer together after a shaky start.

Boy In The Red Sweater by starrynytex.  Bella and Alice are best friends and social misfits at Forks High.  They bond over Bella’s writing and Alice’s art.  New boy Edward Cullen comes to the school and is immediately the new target of the “in” kids.  Bella feels bad for him and she and Alice set out to draw the wrath of Lauren and her minions to keep Edward from their torment.  He won’t talk to anybody and wears a red sweater to school every day.  She gets him to talk and a relationship evolves.  I really liked this one.  The kids are all pretty messed up in the head; Jasper is a raging psychopath, Alice is co-dependent and plenty of other stuff, Bella is messed up over her mom’s suicide, Edward is neurotic, Angela is a cutter…it’s not the lightest of reading but there is a lot of humor mixed in and the relationship does become rather beautiful.

Cowboys & Indians by minisinoo.  This one is specifically here for Rameau.  It’s only 10 chapters and it’s about Jasper and Leah becoming unlikely friends.  It’s very intellectual in the beginning and was far over my head, but I think she’ll like the bond between Jazz and Leah and their discussions over racism.  They go on a road trip with Edward and Seth and that’s pretty cute.

Primal Desires by Velvet Blood Roses.  Picks up after Italy in New Moon.  Bella returns home with Edward and they have a fight with Jake.  They make love and he changes her right then at her request.  Her death is faked and she and Edward move to London.  There’s a sequel as well.  It’s a light story, nothing overly complicated.

The Locker Next Door by UnoriginalScreename.  Bella has a blog and she uses it to rant about her bio partner who treats her badly.  She calls him “Norman”.  She tries to figure out just what’s wrong with him.  Easy read, just a blog and some fake messages.  One of her readers may just be “Norman” himself.

Not Her by Heaven’s Immortal.  Supposes that Edward does not save Bella from Tyler’s skidding van.  Instead he runs up and bites her while she’s wedged between her car and his.  It causes her to change and the Cullens have to take her in.  She’s none too happy about this forced change and she doesn’t know that Edward is the one that bit her, she blames Carlisle.  She and Edward eventually start to bond but she doesn’t know that he’s the one that caused her to “die.”  Interesting concept.

Prey by summer35.  What would a list of fanfics recommended by me be without having one that had a disturbing, dark Edward that I found inexplicably hot?  This one might even upset me more than The Blessing & The Curse.  Edward happens upon 8 year old Bella who has cut herself in the woods.  He immediately starts licking her wound and biting her.  The Cullens take him away before he can do too much damage.  Fast forward 9 years and she’s back in Forks after moving to Arizona with her mother.  She’s human but not all the way.  She has some vampire qualities and her blood still calls to Edward, but now it’s more sexual in nature.  She recognizes him and confronts him about what he did.  Somehow their blood bond could kill them both if she doesn’t change.  There is some confusion involving the Volturi and the wolves but the real story here is the draw between the two.  He’s forceful in his attention to her and I did see a comment or two about their first time being “rape”.  I disagree on that front but it’s not a pretty romance.  Very interesting though!

String Theory by Dooley.  An alternative Forks.  Bella and Jacob are brother and sister, more or less, due to Charlie and Renee taking in Jacob when Billy died when he was a kid.  Edward and Emmett are miserable foster kids.  Alice is a runaway taken in by the Whitlock family; she and Jasper are a couple.  Dr. Cullen comes to town and watches them all saying that something isn’t right.  Turns out they’re in an alternate dimension and he wants to restore things to the way they should be.  Emmett has dreams about Rosalie; Bella dreams about vampire Edward (and doesn’t even realize that he’s the Edward that is Jake’s friend).  It’s a little strange but different from anything else I’ve read.

Letters to Gramercy by OhMyWord.  Back to romance.  Bella goes to NY with Rose & Alice and while there she sits in a bar writing a letter to herself about wanting to change her life.  She’s in a lifeless relationship with Mike Newton and trying to work up the nerve to end it.  She runs into someone in the bar and loses the letter.  Edward finds it; it speaks to him and he writes her back.  They start corresponding via letter, then email, then webcam and finally meet in person.  Bella has some past hurts she can’t get over and she pushes him away (annoyingly, I wanted to smack her several times).  It was rather sweet most of the time though and as a web nerd, I just find romance via letter and email to be appealing.  Sue me!

Breaking by OhMyWord.  Way different tone from Gramercy.  Starts off with Bella and her boyfriend attempting suicide.  She didn’t go through with it, he did.  She’s in a mental hospital and Edward’s her doctor.  He’s drawn to her, inappropriately, and she is as well.

No Sleep For The Wicked by justaskalice.  Bella and Jake are in a four year relationship that’s gone stale, at least on her part.  She sees Edward one day in a coffee shop and he inspires her to begin writing again.  She then meets him through Rose and Emmett.  Her relationship with Jake ends and she and Edward get closer.

Once Upon A Time, In Therapy by AllyR.  The title tells you what it is.  Bella is an anorexic abuse victim at the hands of her boyfriend, Jake.  Her father makes her go to group therapy.  The other kids there are Alice, an upper taking shoplifter; Emmett, a roid rager; Jasper, an alcoholic suicide attempter; Rosalie, abused by her father and raped (much like Rose’s real story); and Edward, a coke addict and car thief.  The kids begin to bond through their mutual disdain for their counselor; minus Edward.  Bella eventually reaches him though and they start falling for one another.  It’s not a pretty story but it’s well written.  Jake’s a complete ass, so if you hate him, this is a pretty good one for that.  Edward gets to administer a beat down, it is lovely.

Same Time Next Year by socact.  A class trip before senior year.  Bella’s the new girl.  She and Edward are drawn to one another but don’t want to be.  Jasper makes Edward keep Bella occupied so he can make the moves on Alice and they end up spending the weekend together in the honeymoon cabin.  They eventually fall and come up with a pact to meet at the same time every year and spend the weekend together.  Chronicles at 10 year period of them being both romantically involved and broken up but still meeting up.  Rather romantic, I felt.

Over The Limit by socact.  Just 5 chapters so far.  Edward gets busted for speeding and ordered to an anger management class and community service.  Bella gets busted the same night for speeding and assaulting a police officer, who she freaked out on for no good reason.  They attend class and rub each other the wrong way right away but they have forced interaction.  Early but I like it.

Deconstructing Dracula by hmonster4.  Bella is working on her thesis on Dracula and her best friend, Rose, talks her into coming to London with her for 6 months.  Bella is fresh off a break up with Mike Newton so she goes.  There she meets Edward, a British rogue who enjoys playing games with her.  Their relationship is complicated by the fact that she looks just like a woman from his past.

Inked by ARenee363.  Edward is a tattoo artist.  Bella is a tattoo getter. Immediate attraction.  They enjoy exploring one anothers tattoos.  I’m not big on needles or pain or the thought of my Edward all covered with tats but this is pretty well written and there’s great chemistry.  And push and pull.

Penny For Your Thoughts by neverstopdreaming.  Bella is human but telepathic and can read minds.  She hears Edward’s desire to kill her and confronts him instead of running.  She can shield Edward from reading her thoughts.  They end up bonding and she ends up hanging out with the Cullens.  James happens upon her and senses her talent.  He challenges her and she uses her mind mojo to throw him across the room.  This makes him want her as a future vamp and ally.  Edward wants to protect her.

The Day The Earth Stood Still by Sare Liz.  Edward can hear Bella’s mind and he’s intrigued by her right away on her first day of school.  He even goes at night and listens to her dreams of him.  She’s not his singer but he finds that slipping into her mind when they’re close makes him not have any blood lust for her at all.  They communicate through her thoughts a lot.  Cute one.

Bright Like The Sun by dryler.  Pretty much Twilight without the vampires.  Edward is antisocial and has possible bad boy tendencies.  He saves Bella from Tyler’s van but breaks her arm in the process of saving her so he volunteers to drive her to and from school for 2 months.  They get to know each other.  They’re very snarky with one another.  No romance at this point but I enjoy the heck out of them.

Crush’n’Push by dariachenowith.  Ha, I found the stalker Edward one.  I forgot, it goes off the rails there at the end and she tries to do too much, but in the first half of the story Edward toys with Bella quite a bit but she gives as good as he does.  I recommend it for that alone.

Oh, Inverted World by DevilKalika.  Edward is a Catholic school virgin with a haunted past.  He meets Bella when his cousin, Alice, drags him shopping in Port Angeles.  She’s pretty much his perfect woman but he gets flustered when he tries to talk to her.  She makes the moves and he falls in line, but he’s afraid to open up about his past.  Very snarky and fun but also serious.  I really like it.

Stripped by punkfarie.  Bella’s dumped on her father, Charlie, when she can’t get over her boyfriend, Jacob’s, death.  She meets the Cullen kids and she and Edward start falling for each other.  Unfortunately, Charlie has a major hate-on for Edward because he thinks he abused one girlfriend and raped another.  Alice helps them to get together but when Charlie finds out he’ll rip them apart.

Stephenie Meyer and the Renegade Characters by browniechadowes.  Hilarious.  Basically she retells Twilight with snarky commentary from the characters themselves.  Bella can’t get over her insta-love with Edward and her complete lack of self.  Jessica is especially awesome in this one.  Love the Mike lines as well.  She did all 4 books, I’ve only read this one so far but it had me in tears.  Minus points for her having a Jacob jones though, there’s some blatant Jake loving in there that I could do without but it’s still funny as hell.  I have since read all the others and must recommend them all.  Particularly the Uterus of Steel, AKA Breaking Dawn parody.  Made of awesome.

Cullen Family Camping Trip by LeesaM.  This is another humorous one.  Charlie is going out of town so he requests that the Cullens let Bella go camping with them.  It’s rife with typical Bella clumsiness and issues, plus you get to enjoy the Cullens idea of what a human would do on a camping trip.  Rather cute, really.  She is doing a second one wherein Charlie signs Bella and the Cullens up to be camp couselors, it’s just started but in the same vein.

Living Backwards by caiobella27.  This one imagines Bella and Alice and Rose after college.  Bella gets drunk, falls, and wakes up back in 1999, a senior in high school.  She wasn’t friends with Rose and Alice then and sets about to become their friend and rectify some issues they have in the future.  Alice is in a bad business partnership with Tanya and Rose and Emmett took about a decade to get together.  Bella looks to step out of her bookworm self and become more a part of school and part of that is talking to and spending time with one bad boy Edward Cullen.   Cute one.

My Little Black Ache by istandcorrected.  Bella tried to commit suicide a year and half prior to when this story starts.  Nobody forgets this fact and she’s rather an outcast.  Jasper is her best friend and Rose and Emmett are close with her as well.  She goes to a party and drinks for the first time in a year or so and stumbles upon a fight between Mike Newton and Edward.  Attempting to stop it, she accidentally gets hit by Edward and a weird relationship starts to form.  Only 8 chapters so far but kinda interesting, some dark humor.

A Deeper Shade of Green by lola84.  Bella the Bitch meets Edward the Asshole.  She’s new at school and sets out to establish herself as the queen bee, don’t fuck with me sort of girl.  Jess and Lauren immediately become her little lackeys.  The Cullens move to the school and word spreads that Edward was a player in Alaska.  He and Bella collide in several of the same Twilight scenarios we’re all familiar with.  Bella’s haunted by a stalker ex and Edward just doesn’t know how to open up.

The List by Laura Cullen.  I’m not gonna lie, this one is pretty hot.  Before their wedding, Bella makes a list of various things that she’d like to do with Edward, sexually.  With a little assist from Alice, she finds Edward receptive to exploring prior to the wedding.  There’s an innocence but also a lot of hotness to the happenings that occur.  Goes right through the honeymoon and changing.

A Darker Shade of Twilight by VampGirl.  The title pretty much says it all.  Quite dark, pretty disturbing.  Imagines that James really did kidnap Renee and he kills her in front of Bella in the ballet studio.  Turns out he killed Charlie before leaving Forks as well.  Then he attacks her much like in Twilight but throws in a rape for good measure.  This fic actually made me cry, not during Bella’s attack but when Edward and co watched the video and you knew he was going to see that she’d been raped.  Really well written and quite traumatizing.  Jake’s a raving psycho as well, so it’s not a story for Jacob fans by any means.  It’s cliffhanger ending with a set up for a follow up story which could be interesting.   It’s pretty depressing but still well written and worth a read.  I’m going to have read a funny fic after this one though!

Son of a Preacher Man by LaViePastiche.  Different one.  Jasper is a player who likes to devirginize high school girls.  He gets a load of private school girl Bella at a bar and decides he wants to have her.  She has a crush on Edward Cullen, who is dating Jasper’s sister Rosalie.  Edward doesn’t know she’s alive until Jasper starts talking about her and he starts feeling protective.  Very good read.  Very different, lots of Jasper/Bella action and only baby steps with her and Edward.  I really do like it, you get all 3 views on what’s happening.

Eye Contact by silver sniper of night.  This one is so different and interesting.  I love it.  Bella is studying to work with children with Autism and interning at a school.  She goes into the music room and sees Edward playing.  She interrupts him and he actually hits her and runs away. Turns out he has Aspergers Syndrome.  He seeks her out to apologize and they begin bonding.  I feel like I’m learning a lot about Aspergers, especially as she writes a few chapters from Edward’s viewpoint and you get to see how his thoughts flow.  Really enjoyable.

Even More Twilight Fanfiction blog now up!

I’ve already linked to several Twilight fan fics in comments on my other blogs but I figured I should make a blog with all I’ve read in one spot.  I’ll keep coming back and adding to this as I read more, but I wanted to get it started as I’ve devoured quite a bit in the last few weeks.  I went on a quest reading various vampire novels and while I found several series I really enjoyed, I didn’t find anything that spoke to me the same way that Twilight did.  So when I ventured into fanfiction I did so with a lot of skepticism, would other versions of Edward and Bella speak to me the way they did in Twilight?  And I found that they completely did.  It’s truly Edward that I love, I embrace him in all forms it seems.  Bella is often improved upon in the fics I’ve read as well, not to mention more substance given to Jasper and Carlisle and the rest of the clan I’ve fallen for.  I have four books sitting beside me to read but I’d rather hit the net and find the next fanfiction that speaks to me.  Thanks to Rameau for getting me started and AGO and Lady for throwing new stuff my way.  Without further ado, here’s the fics:

Wide Awake by Angstgoddess003.  This is the first big one that I read and it’s the one that got me hooked enough to continue in my research.  Edward and Bella are human next door neighbors who cannot sleep at night due to past traumas.  They bond in the night and find understanding and completion in one another.  Fabulous story with only a chapter and an epilogue left to go.  I’m dying for more.

Creature of Habit by EZRocksAngel.  In this one, Bella goes to work for the reclusive Edward Cullen, eccentric rich guy whom she rarely gets to see.  He’s a vampire here and her scent tortures him just as it does in Twilight.  He oversees his families charitable business by day and by night he tries to keep vampires from killing humans.  Love ensues.

The Red Line by WinndSinger.  Easily the hardest one for me to get through.  Edward is a stripper/male prostitute and Bella hires him to do a psychological study on.  He instructs her in the ways of sex and she teaches him that he’s worth loving.  Very heavy S&M punishment type stuff on some of Edward’s jobs, hard to get through.  I did like his interaction with Bella but it’s not one I would go back to.

Irritable Grizzly Adams by caligula42.  Supposes that when Edward left Bella in the woods in New Moon, he didn’t return to her.  He lied to her and to his family.  6 years pass and Bella becomes some wildlife student, working to study wolves.  She has a wolf/dog named Jake (HA) and goes with a professor to Alaska to meet with some colleagues and get a grant.  Edward and Carlisle are there to give money.  Confrontations and angst ensue.  This one isn’t finished but it’s decent, the issue I had was that Edward didn’t appear til the 6th chapter or thereabouts, I missed him.

Let Your Light Shine by LolaShoes.  These two are my favorites after Wide Awake.  Picks up on Bella and Edward’s honeymoon after she gets in the water.   LOTS of sex.  I mean LOTS.  No Renesmee.  Bella is transformed by Edward as a choice, not because she’s dying.  The Cullens are all there with her.  Great stuff.

A Life Extraordinary by LolaShoes.  Sequel to Let Your Light Shine.  Bella’s life as a vampire.  More bonding with the Cullens, particularly Jasper.  Lots more sex.  Cameos by Angela and Mike and Jessica and Aro.  Not yet finished but close to being done and she appears to be updating weekly.  These two combine to be the Breaking Dawn that I would have enjoyed.  Bella’s power is different as well and there’s good exploration of her ability.

Abbracciare il Cantante by Bratty-Vamp.  I loved this one too, up til the end which I felt was too rushed.  Supposes that Edward leaves Forks that first day that he smells Bella in biology class.  Picks up 3 years later in college at Dartmouth when she wanders into his class again.  This time he stays and a story ensues….

The Arrangement by manyafandom.  This one is another sexual one, threesome between Bella and Edward and Jasper.  They’ve all been best friends since they were 5 years old and they’re living together to go to grad school.  One drunken night Bella makes a move on Edward with Jasper watching and he joins in.  It gets complicated because Bella and Edward are secretly in love with one another and Jasper gets emotionally involved as well.  Not finished yet, lots of sex naturally and plenty of angst.

Innocent, Vigilant, Ordinary by Oxymoronic8.  Supposes that the Cullens don’t arrive in Forks until Bella’s senior year.  She’s involved with Jacob, gave in to his desires to be more than friends but clearly though she loves him, something is missing.  Edward is a vampire in this one and they become tentative friends.  She’s torn between pursuing something exciting with Edward or going with the one she knows in Jake.  Not finished and hasn’t been updated in awhile which concerns me, but at least it ends in a good place if she doesn’t continue.

Hiding In Plain Sight by limona.  This one has Emmett as a cop who has to hide Bella in witness protection.  She ended up working for the Volturi family, notorious mob bosses, out of college and found out they were killing people.  Emmett’s brother, Edward, volunteers to let Marie (her real name, she changes it to Bella to hide) stay at his house and pose as his fiancee.  Jacob Black is his gardener, they bond a little which drives Edward crazy, he and Bella grow closer.  Also not finished but looks to be updated fairly recently.

Only Human by Amethyst Jackson.  Edward and Bella return from their honeymoon and the Cullens throw Bella another birthday party.  She makes a wish that she could give Edward human experiences and she’s transported to 1918 where she meets Edward Masen and his family.  In present time, Edward gets new memories as she and human Edward interact in the past.  I found this quite interesting and enjoyed getting to see human Edward and his parents.  Bella’s conflict of loving both human and vampire Edward was interesting.

Bonne Foi by Amethyst Jackson.  This one is still in progress but updated recently as well.  Here, Edward Masen is going to college and he is on the prowl for a lovely lady to kill.  He meets Bella and gets her alone with him but finds himself becoming more interested in her than her blood when they start talking.  It supposes that our virginal Bella would not be adverse to having sex with a virtual stranger, but I guess when he looks like Edward who cares?  He keeps her alive and enjoys sleeping with her, since he can’t hear her thoughts and get turned off.  After meeting her, he finds that he hears her voice whenever he is getting ready to bite a human so he turns to animals.  He ends up in Forks with her and meets Carlisle and learns that there are other vamps living off animals.  He tells himself that he’s only keeping Bella alive because he enjoys sleeping with her but his feelings are growing and he’s in denial.  Interesting one.

If Love Could Light A Candle by Pastiche Pen.  This one was different, flashed back to Edward hunting humans in the 1920’s and doing penance now by becoming a psychiatrist.  One of his patients is new girl Bella Swan and he is into her smell but also falls for her.  Only 6 chapters so far and it’s been awhile since updated but I found this one intriguing.  Edward was following Bella around and just fascinated with her, plus it was fun to see hunter Edward come out to play in his memories.  Hopefully she’ll update soon.

So that’s it so far, not that that’s not plenty to chew through!  Rameau links some on her site as well, some I mention here and some others I have yet to get to.  I picked up a lot from a Wide Awake fan forum, A Unicorn Ate My Fucking Cookie, which I recommend as their recommendations are the ones I’ve thrown at you here.  They know of what they speak, plus it’s a great place to discuss Wide Awake and Twilight.  I’ll post any new ones I read here below this paragraph so come back often, some of these fics I devour in one sitting so I’m quite capable of adding several in a week.  Happy reading to those of you who try this!

More:

Learning To Say No by ShilohPR.  Not yet finished and hasn’t been updated in awhile but her notes indicate she hasn’t abandoned anything.  Imagine Edward and Bella drinking and hooking up, that’s what you get here.  They have a hell of a time talking to one another unless lit up.  Some genuinely funny happenings though, I laughed with this one more than any other.

Midnight Desire by Twilightzoner.  A play on Midnight Sun, with Edward’s “monster” being his horny teenage boy status when it comes to Bella.  Also amusing and it made me feel guilty for all those make out sessions with my high school boyfriend, leaving him hot and bothered.  Sorry Chad!

The Best Man by Bratty-Vamp.  Jasper and Bella are best friends from childhood.  She comes back to Forks at his request and he tells her he’s marrying Alice.  He sets up a competition between her and his big brother, Edward, for best man in the wedding.  Bella’s crushed on Edward since they were kids.  Only 6 chapters in but it’s amusing.

The Office by tby789.  Porn.  Pure porn.  There’s really not much Edward and Bella about Edward and Bella in this story but it’s very porntastic.  Haha Edward is the boss, Bella is his assistant, they pretty much hate each other.  One night he makes a move on her and they have a lot of hate sex.  Feelings ensue.  Lots of underwear ripping.

Edward’s Eclipse by Vixen1836.  Various chapters of Eclipse told from Edward’s point of view, including the first time Bella sneaks off to see Jacob, the engagement scene and the scene in the tent with Jacob.  My only complaint with this one is it didn’t cover the kiss and aftermath, though it’s probably a good thing because I would have lost it dealing with Edward’s pain in those moments.  Very much Midnight Sun Edward here, loved it.

Mr. Horrible by algonquinrt.  This one is not the Edward and Bella we have grown to know, not at all.  But it might very well be the funniest of the fics I’ve read.  I don’t even know how to describe it to be honest.  Edward is a rich kid with his own internet company and she’s a temp and fanfic writer.  She marches to the beat of her own drum and manages to wrap him and his whole family around her little finger.  It’s amusing and like in Wide Awake, has liberal use of the word fuck and fucking.  I’m always appreciative of that.  Oh, and it includes drag queens and drunken grandmothers.  What more could you want?

Cascade & Cyanide by americnxidiot.  Bella moves to Forks and is promptly warned to stay away from the psychotic Edward Masen.  She’s his bio partner and drawn to his quiet and sad demeanor.  She makes an effort to draw him out and help him deal with some deep issues.

The Nymph & The Waterfall by Pastiche Pen.  Bella moves to Forks and becomes fast friends with all the Cullens, except for Edward.  Waterfalls and gnomes are featured.  Lots of build up to the romance but in a fun way.

Follow You Into The Dark by Guineapigbarbie.  Very interesting concept.  Bella’s mother leaves her at the hospital at the age of 5 with a note asking for someone to provide her with a family.  Carlisle takes her in and she’s raised with all the Cullens, minus Edward who had gone off to work with the Volturi a couple months before she came to them.  When she turns 18 he comes home and they fall for each other, naturally.  Edward’s work with the Volturi comes into play and Bella winds up in danger.  It was a very interesting idea but too short, she used 18 chapters to make them meet and fall in love and establish this problem with the Volturi.  Worth a read but will leave you feeling a little sad at what could have been with double the chapters.

Carpe Noctem & Fiat Lux by queenofgrey.  To say this story has me intrigued would be an understatement.  To say that I am craving new chapters and am mad at myself for reading this one before remotely completed is also an understatement of epic proportions.  If you like dark and angsty, this is the story for you.  Edward moves alone to forks and happens upon Bella working in a bar.  He attacks her, causing her injury but not biting her.  He bites himself instead.  Bella, bored with her lot in life, decides to go confront him rather than turn him in.  He calls in the reinforcements and they work on training him to deal with her scent because she’s not going away and he’s not going to either.  Bella’s lack of self preservation leads her to keep seeking him out despite the obvious danger.  Alice starts acting as a go between and the two start exchanging letters as a form of communication while he works on desensitizing.  It’s captivating, really.  She appears to be writing and posting quickly at least but like I said, I’m anxious already for the next chapter.

Betwixt by queenofgrey.  What can I say, I liked her other story so thought I’d hit the other one she’s writing.  Totally different feel.  Alice and Bella become best friends freshman year and Alice tells her their secret.  We pick up senior year and Bella is an honorary Cullen, Edward being the only one who dislikes her.  Carlisle has found a way to possibily bring back the humanity of the Cullen kids and Bella has to be part of it as the only human who knows their secret.  Edward is against trusting her but as senior year chips away he starts to change his mind and let her in.  No idea if the Cullen kids will actually become human but it’s another good read.

The Burning Shade And The Fading Light by hexumhunnie311.  This one supposes that Bella is the vampire.  She and best friend Alice have been hunting bad humans…Alice still has her future seeing abilities and Bella has Edward’s mad mind reading skills.  They nearly attack a little girl and decide that they need to get off the blood lust path.  Alice has visions and they head to Forks, where they’re drawn to an apartment housing none other than human Edward and Jasper.  They are both intrigued but then head to a mansion Alice sees and meet the Cullens and learn about vegetarianism.  It’s only 5 chapters long so far but it’s kinda fun to have the shoe on the other foot with Bella being the vamp and Edward being the human.  Very little interaction at this point but I’m sure it’ll ramp up soon.

The Blessing and The Curse by The Black Arrow.  Dear Lord.  Imagine Benjamin Linus playing Edward Cullen.  This Edward is a manipulative, controlling, possessive prick.  If you thought Edward was possessive in Twilight, haha, well you’re in for a world of shock at a real possessive Edward.  Edward and Bella were born 3 hours apart and grew up best friends.  He regarded her as his possession and cut short any guy that tried speaking to her as they grew up, either verbally or physically.  Fast forward 6 years and Bella returns to Forks because Esme is dying.  She’d helped raise Bella since Renee died when she was 5 and Bella’s there for her.  Edward’s there as well and back to trying to make Bella back into “his”.  It’s disturbing how he is about her but I will not deny that there’s something hot about it.  Rose calls him creepy hot and that’s pretty dead on.  I, like Bella, need therapy.  Still, really WELL written and quite fascinating.

Coming To Terms by GinnyW 31.  In this one, Bella and Edward meet and have an apparent one night stand.  She’s transferred to Seattle and finds out that that night led to a baby.  She tracks down Edward and he goes from happy to irate over her news.  Turns out there’s a past….etc.  This one is near done but not quite.  Edward is a complete douche for a lot of the story and as an Edward lover that’s hard to deal with but she does redeem him some and validate some of his reactions.

Metamophosis by LivesAmongTheStars.  Wow.  Just wow.  This is the 3rd part of Breaking Dawn written in Edward’s point of view, from Bella’s transformation up til the confrontation with the Volturi.  She’s cut off as they show up in the clearing, so there’s probably only 2 chapters left.  She captures Edward perfectly and we experience his joy in Bella’s happiness and his angst over the danger to Renesmee.  It’s beautifully done and she adds little scenes that bring out more in the characters.  Couldn’t recommend it more, hope she updates soon.

Bella Swan: Kidnapper by Kambria Rain.  This is another funny one.  Bella’s a single mom and she runs across a woman yelling at and preparing to hit a couple kids.   She takes them, hence the kidnapper.  Turns out that their dad is Edward Cullen.  Sarcasm and pranks ensue.  It’s a fun story that kept me grinning constantly.

The Doll House by Kambria Rain.  Completely different from her other story, this one is Twilight meets Friday the 13th.  Bella and a bunch of the Forks folks all go into the moutains for spring break.  There she meets mysterious mountain man Edward.  Her friends start dying and disappearing, they’re being hunted.  Appearances by most of the main and secondary characters.

And yet another:

Tropic of Virgo by In.a.blue.bathrobe.  I really enjoy this one.  Edward and the rest of the Cullens are in a band, Breaking Dawn, and Bella moves to town.  Edward hears her sing and becomes instantly smitten with getting her in the band, then with getting her.  Unbeknownst to the two of them, they are communicating on the internet through their blogs, his for song writing and hers for poetry.  They communicate back and forth about getting together and cutely Edward is jealous every time she gets a text updating her on a new message from her online pal.  It’s a good read, 28 chapters in so far.

The Vampire in the Basement by michellephants.  I love that I’m still finding really good stories to read, even though I feel like I’ve read about a hundred or more at this point.  This is another nominee for the Eddies & Bellies so I checked it out and I’m entranced yet again.  In this one, Bella is friends with all the Cullens, they’re vamps.  Alice saved her from an attack by James and that’s how she was brought into their world.  One day, Emmett and Jasper and Carlisle find a body lying in the river, they assume it’s a dead human but on closer inspection find it to be a vampire, badly injured.  They take him to the basement as he is a potential danger.  Bella comes to the house despite orders not to and goes to the basement and finds him and goes to him despite his growling at her and his obvious threat.  She’s the only one who can remotely calm him as they try to figure out how a vampire became wounded and starving.  Watching Bella and Edward grow closer is just beautiful really, I don’t have any other words for it.  Highly recommend it.

Just One of the Guys by SorceressCirce.  If you ever wanted Edward Cullen to be your boyfriend, and I will admit I have, this is definitely an Edward to have.  Bella and Jasper are best friends living together.  She has a trauma in her past that makes her afraid of most males.  Jazz and Alice start dating and Alice convinces Bella to go to the movies with them and her brother, who is asexual according to her.  He was badly hurt in high school and she thinks he’s been away from women since.  There is almost insta-love in this one but it works with the characters.  Jasper is all kinds of awesome too.  Written by an Engish teacher and a good read.

Breaking The Silence by SparklingTwilight.  I don’t usually throw a recommendation to one that I have yet to finish, but this one is causing me to make an exception.  I read another story by this author and like her style and this story has me quite interested.  Bella is a foster kid taken in by Esme and Carlisle.  She hasn’t spoken a word in 5 years.  Renee and Charlie were killed and Bella injured.  She blames herself for that and while she has a lot of internal dialogue, she doesn’t speak it but to the reader.  She lives back in Forks, where her family lived when she was younger.  She used to be best friends with Edward, Emmett and Jasper along with Angela, Jessica, Lauren, Mike and Tyler, but when she returned after whatever happened to her family, she pushed them away by not talking to them.  The story takes place right before junior year of high school.  Alice moves in next door and befriends Bella despite her lack of speaking.  She manages to bridge the distance between Bella and Carlisle and Esme and gets her out of her shell a bit.  We find out through Edward’s viewpoint that he truly loves Bella and that none of them know what happened to her or why she won’t talk to them.  I’m 18 chapters in, it’s 75 chapters long and complete (they are pretty quick chapters though) and completely captivated.  I already adored Alice but I love her all the more here and I feel for Jazz, Em and Edward because they still truly love Bella but don’t know how to reach her.  Excellent so far.

I have added another fanfiction blog, here’s a link:

Okay, this is probably my last New Moon post until the movie actually comes out.  I think I said that before, but this time is for real!  Pics have leaked of the filming in Italy and I thought I’d put them here for my own personal happiness and the happiness of others.  The Edward/Bella reunion looks good!  I’m getting quite excited about a movie that is 6 months away…sigh.  But I figured my fellow Twilighters might like to see a few pictures of shirtless Rob.  If not, well, I’ll enjoy them myself!

Edward deshirting!

Edward deshirting!

Um…yes…these do please me.  What pretty abs!  The random dots on him are for the sparkle graphics, so attempt to disregard!

The abs!!! Who knew?

The abs!!! Who knew?

You know, I’m really trying not to come off as a creepy internet stalker here, really I’m not but the boy is damn hot, I’m sorry!

Edward prepares to step into the sun.

Edward prepares to step into the sun.

I love the zombified look of determination here, it’s so how I imagine Edward looking as he prepares to step into the sunshine and get killed for it.

Reunion moment!

Reunion moment!

See, I don’t have to just show shirtless Rob.  It wasn’t my sole focus!

This doesn't happen in the book but who cares?

This doesn't happen in the book but who cares?

Yep, looks like they have them kiss right away instead of having Bella think the entire time that he doesn’t love her anymore.  This is a change I don’t really have a problem with so long as we can see a good talk between the two of them.

More of the kiss.

More of the kiss.

Yes, I am really and truly looking forward to this movie, at least I’ll have this to anticipate while I sit through the Jacob stuff.  I know, I’m ridiculous.

So there you have it…just figured that my peeps that don’t frequent all the sites I go to might like to see a little of what we have to look forward to in November.  I know ya’ll aren’t as much of a Rob freak as I am but I like the look and feel of the pictures and think that scene might turn out well.  Bella does run through the fountain to get to him and there are a few pics of her trying to push him back into the shadows as well.  Sadly none of Demetri and Felix lurking, but maybe some will turn up!

The vampire world differs greatly from story to story.

The vampire world differs greatly from story to story.

Most of my spare time (and really time I didn’t even have to spare as well) these past 3 weeks I have spent exploring my inner vampire fangirl.  As ya’ll know, I fell for the Twilight series despite its many flaws due to my love of one Edward Cullen.  That love has not abated in the 6 months since I began Twilight.  Then I got to remembering my love for Angel and Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and I started wondering if maybe I have a vamp thing going on?  I don’t think I want to start hanging out in alleys at night hoping that a vampire will happen upon me, but I admit that the creatures of the night (or in some cases day) intrigue me.  So I decided to read a couple more popular vampire series to see if they had the same effect on me.  I’m proud to say that while I find a few of the vampires in these series intriguing, I appear to be a one vamp girl!  But while reading, and greatly enjoying, two other series I caught a lot of interesting themes that were prevalent in all of them as well as a lot of differences and thought I’d talk about them a little bit.  It’s really fascinating to me and I hope it will be to you as well.

The three series I am comparing are of course Twilight, The House of Night books by PC & Kristen Cast & The Sookie Stackhouse Novels (the series that True Blood is based upon) by Charlaine Harris.  I’ll start out with the main similar themes and then discuss the very different worlds the authors have created.

The Virgin

All 3 novels have sexually inexperienced girls or women.  Zoey Redbird (House of Night) and Bella Swan are both fairly young, 16 and 17 respectively, so no surprise there, but Sookie Stackhouse is 25 or 26 when the series begins.  There are reasons for her virginity that I’ll get into shortly, but she is just as inexperienced as the younger two, maybe even more so than Zoey who at least had a steady boyfriend in high school and has clearly done some physical stuff.  All 3 lose their virginity in the books and all 3 lose said virginity to a vampire.

I flash back to the Scream movies to the virgin never dies discussion with Jamie Kennedy and Neve Campbell’s characters and have to laugh a little.  These virgins don’t die either but they sure have death all around them.  Many a horror movie has mentioned the whole virgin thing so it’s not a surprise the writers all chose to make their heroines innocent.  The contrast between their “light” and the vampires “dark” just stands out all the more.

Girls With Powers

Another major likeness between the 3 series is the fact that all the women have something extraordinary about them.  Bella has her shielding power to block Edward from reading her mind and Jane and Alec from tormenting her physically; Zoey Redbird has the ability to call the elements and has been tagged by the vampire goddess Nyx as a future high priestess; and Sookie can read minds (I was floored when I saw this was written before Twilight) of all humans and pick up some thoughts from werewolves and shapeshifters, but is unable to read vampire minds.  I guess in order to garner and keep the attention of vampire there has to be something fascinating about you, and all three of these women have that in spades.

Everyone Loves The Girl

Okay, so I am generalizing a bit here but one of the heavy Twilight complaints I saw was that Bella had all these guys falling for her without lifting a finger.  I understand the irritation with that somewhat, although I would argue the human boys mostly just liked her because she was someone new in a small town.  I have been the new kid many times in my youth and I can say that you do garner some attention just because you’re different.  It doesn’t tend to last long, but it does happen.

If that bothered anybody reading this, I would highly recommend NOT reading these other series because it’s even more prevalent.  Sookie has 2 vampires, a weretiger, a werewolf and a shapeshifter all sniffing around her in 8 books so far.  Every time a new male character gets introduced I cringe wondering if they’ll be yet another potential love interest.  Zoey has her human boyfriend, her fellow vampire fledgling, a vampire teacher, a red vampire and some kind of demon god all wanting her, through 5 books.  It all ties back into their looks and their abilities, of course, but it can be a bit offputting.  I’m able to swallow it because I like most of the characters involved.

The thing I found most interesting was my reaction to these suitors differs very greatly.  In Twilight, I’m all about Edward.  Jacob need not exist in my book, but whatever.  Never before and never again probably have I ever rooted so heartily for a fictional couple.  But in these other two?  I can see why Zoey would be interested in Heath and Erik and Lauren and even Stark.  Kolona not so much but I understand his draw.  It’s very weird not to have a rooting interest but I think it makes me much more sane.  I did whip through the House of Night books with about the same pacing as I did Twilight though, read one each day.

In Sookie’s case, it’s the exact opposite for me.  I do have rooting interest even though I think I’m probably rooting for the guy that I’m not supposed to.  But I see the flaws with every guy she’s into and I really don’t think any of them are necessarily good choices for her.  Bill was her first love but he turned out to be a liar and a user.  The fact that he’s sorry for this and he loves her still doesn’t move me at all because I never liked him even before I knew he had betrayed her.  He was just so secretive and standoffish in my viewpoint.  Eric, on the other hand, is the vamp I would so love to take a bite out of.  Or vice versa!  He’s far more intimidating and far more dangerous but he’s also tons more complex and interesting to me.  The thing that really sets him apart for me is the fact that he’s very truthful with Sookie, even when he knows what he has to tell her is going to hurt her.  It’s a refreshing difference from my overprotective Edward, who I do love but he could have been more forthcoming about things instead of trying to take care of them himself.  Eric does not have as good a grip on his emotions, I’m quite sure he loves Sookie and I think he knows it but doesn’t feel comfortable saying it.  Still, there’s a heat and a draw between them that is palpable, especially since both have had one another’s blood.  More on that later!

Family Issues

I could have titled this section Mother Issues, since the strongest issues do seem to have been between mother/daughter.  What’s amusing is that we barely know any of the mothers in the series, in fact, Sookie’s died when she was seven but I think her nonaction played a major part in who her daughter became today.  Anybody who has read one of my Twilight blogs might have noticed that I greatly dislike Bella’s mom, Renee.  Any mother who is going to choose a man over her own daughter just sucks in my book, whether or not said daughter still considers her her best friend.  She’s supposed to be your mother, not your best friend, and choosing to wallow because her new husband travels a lot, to the point that you drive your daughter to move to a new state so you can be happy, well that just sets me off.  And eerily enough, Renee is the best mother of the bunch!

Zoey’s mother has the Renee thing going on in spades.  She remarried 3 years prior to the novels starting and basically became her husband’s little parrot.  What he believes, she believes.  He’s a religious nut, she’s now a religious nut.  All vampires are evil so Zoey, who has been chosen to become one, is evil.  Best to let her die rather than let her become a vamp.  Buy her a bible for her 17th birthday to show that she’s evil and needs to turn away from Nyx and embrace their way of thinking.  Yep, that woman is a real prize.

Sookie’s mother takes the cake though, and we get very little about the woman.  It turns out that Sookie was molested by her uncle from about 5 to 7 and when she told her mother, she refused to believe her and told her she had a terrible imagination.  She didn’t even try to keep the guy away from her either.  Sookie later finds out that through her father she has fairy blood and it turns out that said blood makes the people around you more apt to be fascinated by you (hence I guess all the supernatural creatures being drawn to her).  So her father was the center of her mother’s world despite their two young children and she really had no time or interest in her kids.  Fun.  I’m not sorry she died when Sookie was 7 and I’m glad that her grandmother raised her and believed her about the uncle.

Differences

I think those were the main common themes I wanted to discuss, so now I’ll talk a little about the different worlds and lore that the writers have created.  Again, I’ll briefly compare with Twilight but I don’t feel the need to outline all of that with you guys, been there and done that.  While the vamps in Twilight can come out on nonsunny days, these vampires prefer the night, HONs won’t die right away but it does hurt them and it will kill the vamps in Sookie’s books.  There are plenty of other smaller vamp lores to address but maybe I’ll do that in another blog.

One big commonality between the House of Night & Sookie novels is the concept of the vampires living openly among us.  While they were in Twilight, they had to keep their identities hidden.  Not so in these other series.  House of Night is a school where selected fledglings go to learn how to become a vampire.  Over a 3 year time period, they will either become a full blooded vampire (The Change) or they will die.  There’s no rhyme or reason to who becomes a vamp and who dies, at least not that I’ve yet learned.  But the vamps are distinguishable by a marking on their foreheads.  When you’re chosen, a tracker vamp finds you and aims something at you and you get a mark on your head.  You have a day or two to report to a House of Night school or you die.  The vampires are known to the public via their markings and it seems that all our famous actors and actresses are vamps, the beautiful people you know.

In the Sookie novels, the vampires came out of the closet 6 years before the novels started when a Japanese company was able to make substitute blood that they could consist on.  They no longer had to hide and hunt humans so they declared themselves to exist publicly.  That’s not to say that they don’t face some adversity and discrimination, both books have human elements that are against the vampires and attacking them in stealthy ways.  But there are also all sorts of humans lined up to have their blood sucked by a vamp and unlike in Twilight, it’s not a killing thing.  All vamps seem to have the ability to take what they want and leave the person alive and well.  And…horny.

All the novels embrace the possibility of vampire love, albeit with different results.

Yep, both series portray the blood drinking as something very sexual in nature.  The vamps in the Sookie books often bite a little as they have sex.  In turn, if a human drinks vamp blood it acts like a drug and a healing element.  Sookie drinks blood from Bill once or twice and Eric three times and her tie to Eric is deep and abiding as a result.  They can actually sense one another’s emotions.

Similarly, in House of Night, when a vampire feeds on a human or another vamp they can form an imprint with one another.  Yes, there’s that imprint word, only this time it’s not wolves and their mates.  Zoey imprints with Heath and they can actually communicate with one another somewhat and definitely feel what one another feels.  And the actual act of drinking the blood turns out to be a major turn on when it’s guy/girl involved.  Two girls imprint in the HON novels but that one is not sexual in nature, however they are tied and can feel one another’s feelings as well.  It’s really quite fascinating and when reading them I was rather sorry that this did not happen with Edward and Bella in any way.  A friend had mentioned that she would have loved it in New Moon if Edward had known Bella was in danger by a tie with her thoughts, which could have been achieved via an imprint like in these other books.  Ah well!

The House of Night novels not only explore vampirism but they also explore witchcraft and Native American spirituality (which makes me think of the wolves in Twilight, for that matter).  While Zoey is a vampire fledgling, her mark is filled in like that of a regular vampire because Nyx has chosen her as a future High Priestess.  She appears to Zoey in her dream and helps her throughout the novels.  Zoey is able to call the 4 elements plus spirit, a staple of any witchcraft I’ve seen.  Zoey’s grandmother is a native American and she uses chanting and magics as well.  It’s a very interesting diversion from your regular vampires to be sure.  While I’m used to vampires having more skills, it’s quite different to have them using magic.  I have yet to read the Harry Potter novels (and yes, they are on the way!!!) I think this book series ties in somewhat, in the whole school and magic factor.

While the Sookie books do not have magic as done by vamps, they do have magic done by witches and fairies.  Yep, you have a little bit of everything in these books.  Weres don’t just have to be wolves, there are werepanthers and werefoxes and weretigers.  Not to mention shapeshifters that can be anything.  And maenads.  The vampires do not have a school but they do have a governmental system that remains unknown to humans.  There are kings and queens of the state and their sheriffs (Eric is one) control various areas within.  They have meetings and conferences.  I tend to think if Stephenie Meyer had explored the Volturi more, they would stand as a kind of governmental body that might be somewhat similar, although they were all clustered together.

Well this blog has gotten really long and I could probably keep talking for another 2500 words, but maybe I’ll just wait on that for now.  All three worlds fascinate and appeal to me for very different reasons and I wanted to share a little with you.  Hopefully those of you that haven’t read one or both of the other series will check them out and come back and discuss them with me.  I’ve already got one friend hitting the HON as I type, and another friend reading SSN, so I’m pretty excited.  HON is actually written, like Twilight, for the teen audience, so it’s very easy to read and quite enjoyable.  Sookie is more for adults but again, easy read, 300 page books, I was done in a day.  Sometimes with two books in a day.  The new Sookie comes out today and I’ve had to restrain myself from running out to buy it right now.  I have to actually do some work sometime, after all.  I’m not as addicted as I was to Twilight but I certainly enjoy the stories just as much.  Hopefully you guys will check them out if you haven’t already and if you have, please drop me a line and let me know what you thought.  I know there are other series out there to explore and I’m definitely considering doing that after my Harry Potter adventure.   More sexy vampires can only be a good thing, right?
