Sam & Dean find out their adventures are being chronicled.

Sam & Dean find out their adventures are being chronicled.

Oh Kripke!  You really know how to slay don’t you?  Only Supernatural could poke fun at their fandom and themselves for an entire episode and make said fandom fall in love with the show even further.  I laughed my ass off for the majority of the show.  I’m actually under the weather today and off work but that’s not stopping me from re-enjoying this episode.  I thought I’d just highlight the lines that brought no end to my joy and then talk a little bit about what we learned.

The comic's version of Sam & Dean, awesome!

The comic's version of Sam & Dean, awesome!

“From the racist truck to me having sex…I’m full frontal in here dude” followed by a little face from Sam.

“Well, for fans they sure do complain a lot”.  Oh yes, yes we do!

“Screw you simpatico, we lived it” I believe simpatico might post on TWoP, it’s familiar to me.  How awesome is it that they read fan boards?  I mean I know it can be dangerous to cater to fans, but still.

“There’s Sam girls and Dean girls and what’s a slash fan?”  “As in Sam/Dean…together.”  “Together together?  They do know we’re brothers right?”  “Oh come on, that, that’s just sick!” I was in tears by this point.  And I quite agree that writing slash fiction for two brothers doesn’t work for me, but to each their own!

“The best parts are when they cry.” Their expressions!  And actually, some of Dean’s best episodes have been when he cries, so I can’t really argue that.

“Real men?  Well right now I’m crying on the inside.”

The boys having to show their tattoos to prove their Supernatural fandom, followed by the girl dropping trou to show them hers.  “You are a fan.”

“Is this some kind of Misery thing???  It is, isn’t it?” Poor Chuck Shirley.  One quibble though, if he actually sees Sam and Dean in his dreams/visions, then how did he not recognize them when they came to the door?  I know it was cute to make them have to prove themselves but that doesn’t make sense with the visions he was getting.

“There’s only one explanation.  Obviously I’m a god.” How awesome is it that that’s where old Chuck went first?  I must say, they managed to surprise me though, because I thought maybe Lillith was feeding him all this information to draw the boys in but instead he’s a prophet?  I cringed for a moment at that, too much religious stuff can pull me out of this story but I can deal right now, especially when it’s done in such an awesome way.

“A cruel, cruel capricious god.  The beatings I put you through alone.”  “We’re still in one piece.”

“Horror is one thing but to be forced to live bad writing…if I would have known it was real I would have done another pass.”

“I’m sitting in a laundromat reading about myself sitting in a laundromat.  My head hurts.”

Sam's brooding and pensive shoulders.

Sam's brooding and pensive shoulders.

“I don’t know how this guy is doing it but he’s definitely doing it.  I mean, I can’t see your face but I can see your shoulders and that’s definitely your brooding and pensive shoulders.” How much do you love that Dean knows Sam’s brooding and pensive shoulders?  The slash fans are probably regrouping from their earlier slam and penning something new from that line!

“I’ll have the veggie tofu burger.  Oh my god, this is delicious.  Tofu is amazing!” Poor tortured Dean, trying to get off the book’s path but then getting the real bacon cheeseburger anyway and having it taken away.

Dean & Sam try not to fight in the diner.

Dean & Sam try not to fight in the diner.

“It frustrates me when you say such reckless things.  It frustrates me when you’d rather hide than fight.” HAHAH Our boys going Dr. Phil to try to avoid a fight.

“Behave yourself would you?  No homework.  Watch some porn.” Dean’s answer to everything.

“Writing yourself in a story is one thing but writing yourself in as a prophet?  That’s like M Night level douchiness.”

“Interesting exercise, let’s see who the quicker draw is.” When Dean was willing to shoot Chuck if he didn’t come with him to help Sam.

“I am the prophet, Chuck!” Little Chuck facing Lillith and shouting that…hilarious.

As close as I could get to Sam rocking the bitchface.

As close as I could get to Sam rocking the bitchface.

I don’t want to get too caught up in the humor though.  I really enjoyed Sam’s talk with Chuck.  When Sam asked if he knew things about him and Chuck brought up the demon blood and he told him he didn’t even write it down because he thought it would make him seem unsympathetic.  “You gotta know that’s wrong.”  And Sam admits that it scares the hell out of him and he wishes he could stop.  I wish he’d have moments like this with his brother but I recognize to do that would take them off the path they’re headed down.

Sam knows deep inside that he's lying to himself.

Sam knows deep inside that he's lying to himself.

Then of course Sam had to piss me off by saying he needed to do it to kill Lillith and stop the Apocalypse.  When Chuck points out that’s supposed to be Dean’s job, Sam says Dean’s not Dean lately and he needs help.  Again, this came out as Sam doubting Dean’s strength.  Now he did make it nicer by saying that Dean’s carried the weight for him his whole life and he wants to return the favor.  Chuck says that would be nice if that was all it was but questions if the demon blood makes him feel stronger that maybe he’s in it for the wrong reasons.  We know that he is, of course, but Sam still doesn’t believe this.

Beautiful Castiel, always make an episode better!

Beautiful Castiel, always make an episode better!

I also loved the unexpected Castiel appearance.  More Cas is always a good thing.  I don’t know about the Winchester Gospel part of things, but I am choosing to perceive that as a way of poking fun at the biblical scholars in fandom, who are so bright and brilliant that I can’t even begin to understand them.  I know, reaching there but that’s more religious than I’m ready to deal with.

Just a pretty Dean pic, always need more of those!

Just a pretty Dean pic, always need more of those!

I loved Sam saying that Dean thinks he’s going to go dark side and Dean bursting out with YES!  Of course he does and it’s scaring him.  Of course Dean doesn’t know half of what Sam’s been doing but at least he’s not turning a blind eye to it.  Despite everything, when Sam refused to come with him, Dean didn’t take his bags with him when he left, making it clear he wasn’t leaving his brother behind.  I love that about him.  He’s pissed, he hates what’s happening but he won’t leave Sam.  Then Dean tried to pray, in a definite Dean way showing he wasn’t good at it and didn’t like it.

How cute is lying Castiel?

How cute is lying Castiel?

Of course Cas shows up to help him, which is awesome.  Dean gets really pissed when Castiel tells him he won’t interfere and pretty much tells the angels to go to hell if they won’t help him now.  He won’t help them when they need him since they wouldn’t do the same for him.  Then Cas tells him why he can’t help and if anything threatened a prophet an archangel would appear to destroy the threat.  He was telling Dean just what he needed to do to get rid of Lillith.   I love how Cas looked a little nervous after telling him that, kinda looked to the sky like he might be afraid of being struck down but then looked back at Dean with a sparkle in his eyes.

I am highly relieved that Sam didn’t have any intention of actually sleeping with Lillith.  Previews of that had me quite worried, what with the demon blood drinking and Ruby screwing, what’s one more demon in bed?  What I don’t get is why was Lillith so terrified of Sam if she’s immune to his powers?  I guess he’s immune to hers as well so maybe that makes them equals but that doesn’t match up with her fear when Dean went to hell.  She offered Sam the opportunity to sacrifice himself and his brother to stop the Apocalypse.  Interesting question…would Sam have considered it were he not halfway dark side?  I’m sure he’d sacrifice himself but probably not Dean.  Still something to ponder.  Sam told Dean that he didn’t consider it because she’d find a way to get out of it, partly true but not all the way.

Sam’s hubris is really starting to show.  He’s certain that Lillith is running scared and he’s determined to be the one to take her down.  Dean didn’t look thrilled with that commentary but he said nothing.

The prophet Chuck saw something very scary...why must I wait weeks to find out what it is?

The prophet Chuck saw something very scary...why must I wait weeks to find out what it is?

We end on Chuck having some kind of alarming vision and awakening to Zachariah, warning him not to contact Sam and Dean and tell them what’s coming.  It’s bad enough that Chuck considers killing himself to avoid whatever is coming.  Zachariah tells them they’ll bring him back to life if he does.  Chuck desperately wonders what he’s supposed to do and Zachariah tells him to write.

So we’re left wondering what horrors await our boys.  Well played, Kripke, well played.  I thought this looked like a good episode from previews but it exceeded my expectations.  The humor was fantastic but the story still advanced.  Lillith is back and something very scary looms in the boys future.  Zachariah was pretty frightening this time around too.  Cas is helping Dean in ways far beyond what is expected or required of him, I worry about his future.  Sam recognizes that he’s in trouble but he’s not doing anything to stop it.  So much happened, didn’t it?

Next we get the much dreaded third Winchester brother, so we’ll see…episodes like this give me faith that it’s going to be good despite my reservations.  I’m off to ponder some full frontal Dean!  I kid, I kid! Maybe!
