While being unable to sleep on a Sunday morning, my mind turned to my most recent obsessions (what else is there to do when you’re tossing and turning?) and I had an epiphany about myself. When it comes to TV, movies and books, I’m a sucker for bad boys. In my real life, I think I got over this phase after high school, but when it comes to fiction, badder is better. So I thought I’d take a look at the characters I’ve grown to love and try to work through my issues here with you. The first two characters on this list are not really bad boys by any means, but they have some bad boy traits that make them qualify. Plus I just wanna talk about them and this is my blog, so there!

Edward Cullen, from photobucket
Edward Cullen, vampire from the Twilight Series. Edward is most certainly not a bad boy, he’s actually very heroic but he is a vampire with obsessive qualities and the burning desire to kill the girl he loves. This is not exactly the type of guy that I’d bring home to mom and dad if you know what I mean. He fights the monster in his nature and of course is triumphant, but with his super strength and desire for blood, he’s a little on the scary side. Not to mention the fact that he’s an obsessed stalker who sneaks into his future girlfriend’s bedroom to watch her sleep at night. I love Edward and Bella’s story but even I know that it’s a sick twisted love. I just happen to be fan of that! I’m not hot for Edward but I wouldn’t mind having a slightly older version of him for myself (yeah he’s over 100 in regular years, but physically he’s stuck at 17 and that’s just a bit much for me).

Dean
Dean Winchester, Supernatural. Dean is also far more of a hero than he is a bad boy, but he does have some of the qualities that make a girl wonder why she’d want to get involved. Dean is a player, never risking his heart and extremely emotionally unavailable. In a recent episode, Sam told Dean he was a dick, which got some Dean fangirls up in arms but I actually stopped to ponder that and realized that he was right. Dean can be a dick, he’s extremely sarcastic and he’s prone to use intimidation to get what he wants. Again, I have no problem with any of these things, I find them extremely hot. But if a parent had the choice of Dean or Sam to pick for their daughter, my guess is they’d lean to Sammy, demon blood or not. Sam has no commitment issues at any rate, it’s just that the girls he commits to always die. hehe Still I’d take Dean any day!

Logan, my psychotic jackass and first tv boyfriend.
Logan Echolls, Veronica Mars. The first time you see Logan, it is with a Veronica voiceover saying that every school has their obligatory psychotic jackass and he was it. Watching him, he just looks like your stereotypical rich boy asshole and in the first few episodes that’s exactly how he acts. Over time you learn that he has been abused by his father all his life, which makes some of his jerkery understandable, but he goes beyond just being a dick. He arranges bum fights, he buys Weevil’s grandmother’s house and threatens to evict her (to be fair, Weevil did burn down his house, retribution you know), he sleeps with his friend’s stepmother…there’s plenty more but that’ll suffice to start. It doesn’t matter though, I fell for Logan just as hard as Veronica did, though of course she was unable to admit it to herself. He may not have been a good guy but really all he wanted was someone to love. He captured my heart somewhere around episode 12 or so and kept it despite being overly emo in season 3. Hell, I named my pet after him, so that should tell you just how much I adored him.
Sawyer, Lost. Ahhh now we’re entering more into the real bad boy arena. Sawyer is a con man, an opportunist and a killer. Being on the island has softened his edges some, but he’s still pretty much all about #1 (unless he’s helping Kate). Season 1 Sawyer was hilarious to watch, taking everything he could and holding on to it until he could barter for other things. This past season saw Sawyer kill Locke’s father, the man who had caused the death of his mother and father. This was understandable of course, but it’s not act a girl hopes to have her future lover pull either.

Eko
Mr. Eko, Lost. I know he’s been gone two seasons but he might have been my favorite Lost character this side of the next guy on this list. Sawyer killed one guy while Eko killed tons of them as a drug lord in Africa. He brought badass to a whole new level. On the island he was silent and brooding but spiritual and interesting at the same time. He could kick ass with no effort at all and I’m still not over his death. The actor asked to be released from the show but I still hate that he’s gone. Can you imagine the Losties fighting the Others with Eko on their side? Maybe that’s why it’s okay he’s gone, cause I wouldn’t doubt the Losties would win if Eko was still there.

Ben, master manipulator
Benjamin Linus, Lost. While I’m not hot for Ben like I am for most of the characters on this list, I may find him the most fascinating of all. He’s a master manipulator who manages to intimidate despite being smaller in stature than most of the male characters on the show. He bends almost everyone to his will and always seems to be a step or ten ahead of everyone else. The one rare time his plan went awry and his daughter Alex got killed right before his eyes, I got chills watching his face and waiting for the fallout. I light up when Ben appears on the screen, I can’t help myself. I’m just anxious to see what he’ll do next. I’ll start Lost blogging when the show picks up and you’ll see just how much I adore this character.

EJ, once so bad, always so beautiful.
EJ DiMera, Days of Our Lives. EJ is sadly the one character who has devolved from awesome into a shadow of himself, but I still am able to love him thanks to memories of the old EJ. That and the hotness. I’m easy that way. The EJ I love was a manipulator, a killer, a blackmailer/rapist…good times. Ok, he was once a little too dark even for me but he wore it well. One of his hottest moments was when he took off his belt and whipped Patrick with it. If you’d have told me that I would ever find something that hot I would have laughed at you, but there you go. Current EJ is just a shell of a man but it’s memories of the real EJ that keep me hoping he’ll resurface and start ruling Salem once again.

The Basshole himself
Chuck Bass, Gossip Girl. Chuck is a character similar to Logan in that I pegged him for a gigantic jackass in the first episode but he won me over a few episodes in. He starts the show wanting to devirginize a 15 year old Jenny Humphrey and coming off as a potential rapist. In typical form, I got over it. Chuck is a major player, I couldn’t tell you how many girls he’s slept with at this point and we’re only in season 2. His main goal seems to be to prove to his father that he’s a real man and he can run the business but he constantly winds up disappointing him. Now that Dad is dead, Chuck’s entering a self destructive spiral that could go anywhere. Chuck’s in love with Blair and vice versa but neither of them are willing to admit it and he figures if they do and get together they’ll lose the appeal they have for one another, so why bother? It’s another twisted relationship that I can’t get enough of.

Sylar, my most twisted
Sylar, Heroes. Speaking of twisted, we come to probably the most twisted of them all. I’ve always been a Peter Petrelli girl (particularly future darker Peter) but this season Sylar has overtaken him for my heart. The first couple of seasons I didn’t really feel for Sylar, mainly because all we saw of him was just his desire to attain new powers and to kill. That didn’t appeal to me, but this season we’ve seen the side of him that craves approval, that wants a family and that actually wanted to be better. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want Sylar to be better, per se, not after the last episode made me love him, but I want him to be more complex than just some killer. And that’s what he’s become. His quest to find his family is going to be interesting to watch and probably make me like him all the more.
Well that’s my list of the fictional bad boys I’ve loved and will continue to do so long after their shows have disappeared. What do you think? Do you have the same bad boy jones that I do? Who else would you add? I’m sure I’m missing plenty but this was long enough without me reaching any further. I’m dying to hear responses on this one, so let me know if you think I’m insane or if you’re just as nuts about some of these guys as I am.
Oversight addition: I forgot to include Dexter Morgan of Dexter. He’s a serial killer who kills bad guys and I really enjoy watching him struggle to maintain a normal fascade in everyday life. He belonged here so I had to add him, my bad!
Sawyer is my total fave. I recently met Edward yesterday but I like him, certainly the twisted side (though like you I wish he were older as well).
Hilarious you have Ben since he’s certainly not the typical hot bad guy. It’s amazing how many sick bastards are on this list and yet they still remain on the list. What does that say about us?
Hee, well I think you’ll get to like Edward more and more as you get reading! Have you started yet?
I had to include Ben, because while he doesn’t get to me hotness wise, he gets to me personality wise big time.
I don’t know what it says about me that I find all these guys so awesome…I think I might be severely disturbed!
Logan was made of awesome! I loved Veronica Mars! It’s one of those things that I adamently recommend to people (that and The Prestige).
I think I would love Sawyer just for this ability to give everyone a nickname.
Welcome to the club of bad boy lovers. I’m one of the founding members of this club but right now I can’t even think where to start with my bad boy addiction.
I haven’t watched Lost since the first season so I don’t really know what you are talking about. I did like Sawyer but not enough to force myself to watch the show.
As for Twilight, Edward was a good choice to start with but there wasn’t nearly enough of Jasper in the books. I’m still wondering what exactly he did to make that certain lawyer fear him so. I also liked Jacob with his feeble attempts of manipulating Bella, so I’m not completely indifferent when it comes to the good guys. I just like the bad boys better.
Dean and Logan are few of my all time favourites as is EJ, the original bad ass DiMera, Chuck and Sylar. Unlike you, I liked Sylar from the start though we didn’t get to see nearly enough of him in the beginning.
I should say that what ever I watch or read, I’ll usually get attached to those bad boy characters and can’t really understand why they are so slighted by others.
To add some names to your list, Gregory House is quite appealing especially when he’s true to his nature and I feel sorry for anyone trying to change him. Angel oozes charm while brooding with a soul but every time Angelus takes over I fear my screen will explode. Spike has the same effect. I’m also sorry Ba’al from SG-1 wont be scheming any more. Back when I still watched NCIS I was furious to see Ari Haswari killed because he should have stayed tormenting the team from time to time.
Do you watch any BBC shows? Guy of Gisborne in leather pants and with black eyeliner can light up a fire with his smouldering looks, Jack Harkness of Torchwood isn’t exactly the kind of guy a girl would bring home but I adore him. Stuart Alan Jones from the original QAF was a real bastard, but he still has a special place in my heart. Soames Forsythe was someone I once thought EJ was aspiring to become.
And just as you wouldn’t call Benjamin Linus hot per se, I wouldn’t call Dr. Hannibal Lecter hot, but he’s the ultimate bad boy of them all. He kills to eat and he does it without any special powers. He also chopped off his hand to save the woman he admired from getting hurt.
I’m sure I’m forgetting more than few names from this list and I might have added few with which you can’t agree, but the tendency is there.
Rameau, I was really close to including Angel and Spike on this list but I refrained just to not make myself look like some kind of vampire stalker. I think I might be one of those girls that has a thing for vampires…this should disturb me. It kind of does. I don’t know. Can you tell I use this blog to try to work out my issues?
I have only watched one episode of House but I can see what you mean. I can’t watch many medical shows, don’t ask me why, I can handle all sorts of violence but watching bodies cut into freaks me the hell out. How I get through Grey’s I don’t know.
As you know, I liked Jasper as well and I have high hopes that maybe he’ll get his own novel someday. Why not? He’ll never change, there’s plenty of time for her to get to him! I like good guys as well but the bad boys seem to hold a special place in the heart and the mind and let’s admit it, the fantasies. I wrote this blog because I woke up thinking about it, which means I had to have been having some sort of dream related to it.
I’m not sure why it took me awhile to get into Sylar but quite clearly I’m enamored of him now. I forgave him for Elle’s death over the 50 minutes of an episode! hehe I didn’t think that was possible.
I have never seen those BBC shows you spoke of but I just might have to check them out!
Yeah…not sure how I forgot Dr. Lecter…he was an awesome bad boy with culture, which adds a layer to it that some of the others don’t have!
Brandi, Logan is my own true love. I can and will pop in a VM DVD and I go right to any major Logan episode, particularly Logan/Veronica ones because the chemistry was off the charts.
Sawyer’s nickname ability is one of his most wonderful traits, can’t believe I forgot to mention that!
I agree with Chuck Bass, he is just amazing
but you are missing 2 BADBOYS:
MAX BRADY, PHILIP KIRIAKIS AND NATHAN SCOTT(ONE TREE HILL).
Why didn’t you include Max Brady?
———-
You should do the VIXENS NEXT. You did the badboys, now let do the vixens
Terry, you know why Max is not on this list. He’s not even a bad boy, he’s just a rage monkey moron. Philip is not here because he’s lost in triangle hell and he was never as dark as EJ…when he tried I didn’t like that him well. No OTH guy is ever going to make my list for anything except for maybe it I do a blog on people that I will never talk about.
I don’t dream of vixens, so don’t hold your breath for that blog!
you don’t have to dream about the vixens, like name your favorites which we all know who should be #1 vixen—-MELANIE.
The point is, vixens don’t interest me…however my guess is if I ever did do that blog, which I won’t, Melanie wouldn’t even make my list, let alone be number 1.
I’ve never really been attracted to the bad boy types – and when I first started watching Supernatural I was a hardcore Sam fan and Sam fan only…but as the seasons progressed, I really became attracted to Dean’s attitude and behavior. I still pretty much find Jared Padalecki a tad bit more attractive looks wise, but in the show Dean is just so much more attractive!
Well I was in my youth and I was pretty sure I was over it. But I started thinking about all my favorite characters on TV and realized that I’m really not over it at all. I mean, it helps that they’re often hot as well but guys like Ben aren’t attractive to me, yet he still rivets me every time he’s on screen. Really he’s become my favorite Lostie.
I’ve always been a Jensen fan first and foremost, loved him since his Days days, but I think Jared is a cutie too. But yeah, Dean is the character I am most attracted to, just the personality he has the determination and sense of what’s right. He’s fascinating.
Funny, I was also going to say that Angel should have been on your list (tied for 1st place with Edward
It doesn’t make you a girl who has a thing for vamps, just a girl with great taste in guys…
Spike would have been an interesting choice….I don’t personally find him attractive, but him turning from bad to good vamp, was a major transition, that I don’t believe he got enough credit for. Yes, Angel did it too, but only because his soul was restored.
I cringe to think of the ‘bad Angelus’ episodes….
Oh Logan….so brooding and misunderstood…sigh…have I mentioned how much I miss VM?
Hehe I really did think of Angel and Spike as I was finishing up and I thought, well their series have been off for awhile now so I’ll just not include them this go-round. But I should have! So hot, both of them. hehe I really was worried about appearing a vamp freak! hehe
I actually didn’t find Spike hot, like I wouldn’t look twice at him did I not see his character develop the way it did. Plus, when he got that shirt off…damn! hehe He was just so sexy with Buffy…though I preferred her relationship to Angel, I did feel like Buffy/Spike were the hotter pair. Invisi-sex and sex as a building tumbled down around them were epically hot. So that’s what got me into Spike!
Logan! I am going to do a VM rewatch soon. I just finished my Buffy rewatch so it’s time to hit VM and then SN. See all my boys!
I know, I’m 4 months late to the party… But I can’t resist weighing in. My favorite bad boy is definitely Fox Mulder of the X Files. Second would probably be Eric Northman from Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries (an AWESOME series if you’ve not read it, and an alright show on HBO). And I have to give honorable mention to Tim Riggins, if only for his ability to make me like him after really hating him initially. I also agree with you about Dean Winchester, I vote for him as hottest on your list.
You can comment on anything, anytime! Glad to have you weigh in. I’ve never heard of that vampire mystery series but I will definitely check it out. Since I clearly can’t get enough of vampires these days, why not?
Ahhh Tim, yes, I should probably have included him on this list though he’s in that gray area. But so are Dean and Edward so he works well enough!
I only saw a few X Files, so I can’t weigh in on Fox
Dean is always the hottest…my love for him eclipses all!
The Southern Vampire Mysteries are AWESOME! I have to admit, I like them better then Twilight, and I didn’t think that was possible! You can check out my review of why it’s awesome here: http://heylady-blog.blogspot.com/2009/01/my-endorsement-of.html
It’s also great because if you do like them there are 8 of them (soon to be 9), so plenty of material! Also, the television show “True Blood” will start it’s second season in June. But if you haven’t seen the show yet, read the books first, the books are FAR better.
Ah so that’s the show True Blood is based upon? I have it in my Netflix but haven’t seen an episode yet. Still I heard it was good. Funny you recommend that to me, another girl at the bookstore told me about Harris this weekend and I was going to look into it anyway!
Logan is the best in prime time shows and Ej is the best in daytime shows (beside now, he is becoming boring and even dumb since he is paired with Nicole character..it’s such a shame ! Bring back the smartass Ej Wells/Dimera please !!).
Logan is made of awesome. Glad you approve!
